Secret Swims

A friend popped in to Noetzie for a swim and a cuppa last week and menoned that she was going to do a “secret swim” somewhere in Ple on Saturday

“A secret swim? Why secret?” I asked.

Turns out it was to raise money, organised by a charity group called “ILoveBoobies”, to provide free breast cancer screening for women who cannot aﬀord to pay for it.

Anne said each parcipant paid R200 to enter

“At midnight on Friday the organisers let you know where you are going to swim,” she said.

There were ﬁve “secret swims” around the coast: Ple, Clion, Blouberg, Scoburgh and Ballito.

Only 200 people could enter at each locaon, and only women and girls could take part.

I assume the locaons were kept secret to prevent too many gawkers, as some of the women swim topless.

Anne has had breast cancer and had a double mastectomy – both breasts removed.

She chose not to have breast implants aer the mastectomies, so her chest is now completely ﬂat, with two big, curved scars on each side.

It was a bit of a shock to see at ﬁrst.

I watched her wade into the sea – too cold for me last week –wearing just her bikini boom. She was the only person on the beach, but I sll think she was brave to go topless, and said so.

“Well, when you think about it, why do women wear costumes or bikini tops? It’s to cover their breasts. I don’t have breasts anymore, so why wear a costume or a top?” she replied.

“And anyway, it is so lekker to swim without a top or a full cozzie, and feel the sea on your skin.”

The Naonal Cancer Register says breast cancer is the most common cancer among South African women, and one in 27 women are likely to develop it.

Regular breast screening can detect cancer at an early stage, before it has spread to other parts of the body. It is relavely easy for middle-income urban women to be screened regularly, because they can aﬀord it and because there are plenty of facilies, but not so easy for poorer rural women. Apart from the cost of a mammogram, there is also the lack of nearby facilies, and the availability of transport to urban areas is tricky and the cost high.

So I think the ILoveBoobies secret swims is a great idea for raising funds, and I take my hat oﬀ to them for thinking of the rural poor I phoned Anne to ask what the Ple “secret swim” had been like.

“Ah, it was really lekker, such a beauful day and such a feeling of camaraderie. There was a crowd in the water but no opportunity to chat really, but there was one woman who caught my eye – I guess she saw my scars – and she put her hands together in the Buddhist way, so I did that back to her”

ILoveBoobies are doing excellent work (even if their name is a tad cheesy) and I hope in years to come the sea will be seething with secret swimmers and the bucks rolling in.
