A Fishy Story
In my cousin’s co age at Noetzie there’s an old photograph of five men – one of them my grandfather - standing behind a row of fish hanging from a horizontal pole.
I’d seen this pic many mes in my childhood when my grandparents owned the co age, but this week I looked at it with fresh eyes and was struck by two things: first, the enormous size of the fish. They’re hanging from a pole about waist high and the tails of some reach the men’s shoes.
Where does any shore fisher catch fish this size today?
The second thing is how they are dressed: all wearing shirts, es and fedora hats – to go fishing! No shorts and T-shirts in those days.
I took the framed photograph off the wall to see if anything was wri en on the back, and there was my grandfather’s small, neat handwri ng: “L to R Charles Metelerkamp, Rex Metelerkamp, Colonel Stephens, Mayor of Knysna, just in for the picture. One morning’s fishing at Duiker Rock, The Heads.”
There were ques on marks in place of names for the two other men so I imagine my grandfather, Rex, wrote this a while a er the pic had been taken, because he would surely have known the names of the guys fishing with him.
The biggest fish was one he had caught, a white steenbras which he wrote weighed 36 pounds. That’s 16.3kg!
As the mayor had “photo-bombed” the pic, it was just four anglers who had caught the nine big fish between them.
Well, those days are long gone. If you put four anglers at The Heads today I wonder what they would catch in a morning. Nothing like this, that’s for sure.
Today white steenbras are endangered: a mere 6% are le from their original popula on.
There are now fishing restric ons for anglers, and it is illegal to buy or sell white steenbras – and many other endangered linefish. Some say these measures are too li le too late.
So how did they become cri cally endangered?
Overfishing, of course, by both commercial and recrea onal fishermen. By 1990, an es mated 35,000 white steenbras were caught a year – 70% by shore anglers and 30% by commercial fisheries.
Add to this the poor condi on of many estuaries. Juvenile steenbras come into estuaries to spend the first three years of their lives, before heading out to sea. Boa ng, over-extrac on of water and infrastructure built in estuaries, have all contributed to a lousy habitat for young steenbras.
My grandfather, for whom catching a 16kg steenbras at The Heads was all in a morning’s fishing, would never have imagined that one day these creatures would be cri cally endangered.
This made me think that we too may be taking for granted wonderful things in nature that will make our descendants look at photographs of us with envy
I guess we need to appreciate what we have while we s ll have it, and try to live in such a way that we leave nature in good nick for our descendants.
As that wonderful cosmologist Carl Sagan said: “Preserve and cherish this pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”
