Tea for the Timorous
I’m at Noetzie watching wide-eyed as the ocean roars up close to the houses. The beach is completely gone and waves are breaking where we used to sit on the sand. My stomach is in a knot because I fear this is climate change in ac on and we may be losing Noetzie beach forever.
So I made a cup of tea. Just like the Brits do in a crisis.

I’m enjoying my cuppa, but it is the teaspoon that’s taken me down memory lane. I inadvertently inherited it from a housemate in Joburg years ago. The teaspoon is “stolen goods”. It is stainless steel with an engraved flying springbok on the handle - a South African Airways utensil from the days when all SAA passengers were served meals with metal cutlery.
As the last to leave the shared house, I packed up everything le behind, including the stolen spoon. It’s stuck with me for ages and eventually ended up at Noetzie.
The teaspoon got me thinking about communal houses I’ve lived in. We had some good mes, and communal house par es are legendary But it can also be a li le weird living with people you don’t know from Adam.
In Maritzburg where four of us shared a house on 10 acres, we developed a rat problem. I would not let my housemates put down poison – we had monkeys and bushbuck and crowned eagles around –so I bought some traps. They were horrible. They caught the rats but didn’t kill them.
One housemate was unfazed. He pulled a leg out of a li le stool and whacked the rat dead. That bloodied stool leg was around for about two weeks as Jason’s tool of extermina on. A er the rats were gone, he stuck it back into the stool, blood and all.
The Exterminator had strange food tastes too. He would put Marmite, peanut bu er and mayonnaise on one sandwich.
In Durban I remember a group of us ending up at my communal house late a er a paint-your-face party. We were scoffing toast and drinking wine in the kitchen when I heard the familiar sound of the milkman clanking bo les.
“Oh no, I forgot to put out the milk coupons!” (Remember those?) I grabbed coupons and Billy and I ran to the back gate.
We yanked open the garden door, shou ng “Wait!”
The milkman, standing right there in the otherwise sleeping suburb, leaped back in fright and yelled: “Yoh!”
Only then we remembered we s ll had painted faces and he must have got such a skrik – especially because of Billy, who had black eye make-up, sequins stuck all over his face, and a few lips ck “blood drops”
We fell about laughing, and even the milkman gave a bemused grin eventually – and we had secured milk for our communal morning cuppas.
The sea’s s ll raging up against the boundary walls of the houses, but I do feel calmer
