Cobwebs and Wine
One of my sisters came across an ar cle on Annandale Wine Estate near Stellenbosch last week and was amused to read that the seller had got the new owner to promise not to kill any spiders when he took over the farm.
The result is 70-year-old cobwebs draping the walls of the cellar!
That sounded like the kind of thing former owner Reneira van Reenen would have done, and it brought back lovely memories of her and her farm.
Reneira and my mother were both from Knysna and were friends.
She ran a riding school at Annandale, and every year my older sister, who was mad about horses, spent one of the short holidays at Annandale Riding School.
We used to visit when my sister was staying there, and we all loved the farm. We learned how to muck out stables and groom horses.
I remember Reneira as a gently spoken woman. She intrigued us kids because she was a vegetarian. Today vegetarians are a dime a dozen, but back then they were rare, and I think she was the first we had ever met.
And what interested us even more was that the Annandale dogs were also vegetarians. I remember when they were fed, one of the staff would put their enamel bowls outside the farmhouse kitchen, and then call: “Kos, kos, kos, KOSsies!” and half a dozen dogs would come galloping up and tuck into their rice and vegetables. And those carnivores looked very healthy on their vegetarian diet.
Hempies du Toit, who grew up on the neighbouring Alto wine estate where he was later winemaker, bought Annandale from Reneira in 1996.
Hempies is a fi h genera on wine farmer of Huguenot descent. I have never met him but from what I’ve read, he sounds like a nice guy. He was also a Springbok rugby player
According to one of the ar cles, as a youngster Hempies used to see Reneira’s riding school pupils when they went on out-rides. Some mes he joined them, and he and some of the riders entered into gymkhanas.
Reneira had Annandale for 48 years. Hempies got to know her and apparently the two formed a bond.
He is quoted saying that when it came me for her to sell, she would not sell to just anybody, and Hempies must have fit the bill.
He said she believed in living in harmony with nature and would not kill animals – not even spiders.
Reneira apparently asked Hempies to leave the spiders where they were and Hempies promised he would.
Hempies’s philosophy also appears to be trying to live in harmony with nature. According to the Wines of South Africa ar cle, he makes wines with as li le interference as possible in the fermenta on process, so no yeasts and very li le sulphur
I liked his quote: “I never rebel against nature. I accommodate as best I can. It’s not a glamorous farm, but the essence of what we do here is quality”
I’m happy that a place we found enchan ng as children is in the hands of someone like him.
And I’m sure the spirit of Reneira is somewhere smiling too.
