Coral Gardening
There’s been a lot of sad news about coral reefs - but recently some good news too.
Coral reefs are dying because of global warming. Oceans are hea ng up and corals can’t take it. And when they die, the whole reef ecosystem goes.
One scien st compared coral reefs to mul -storey buildings. If you take out the bricks at the bo om, the whole structure will collapse. Corals are like the bricks at the bo om of the building – take them out and the reef ecosystem collapses.
Recently there have been moves to restore corals.
A recent BBC video about this made me feel really hopeful.
It was about “coral gardening” that’s happening at Mnemba, one of the small Zanzibar islands.
Coral reefs are beau ful. When you swim over them, you can’t stop smiling (as much as you can while sucking on a snorkel). The brilliant colours are breathtaking, corals, fish, molluscs, everything just stunning!
Once when snorkeling in the Red Sea my back got badly sunburned because I could not drag myself away from one of nature’s most exquisite displays.
And that’s another reason why reefs are being damaged –“over tourism” – too many people, too great an impact.
Zanzibar has around 200 tourist boats at the reefs daily. Their anchors damage the reefs, as does fuel from engines, and tourists standing on the corals and hacking off bits for souvenirs. Horrible.
Back to the good news.
Several organisa ons are now “coral gardening” to help restore coral reefs and are employing local people to do this.
They go out in scuba gear to healthier parts of the reef and with ny hammers take off bits of healthy coral.
They break these into smaller pieces and then glue them onto li le discs a ached to sheets of mesh anchored to the seabed, and leave them to grow
Within two months they are large enough to be transplanted to areas were the reefs have been ravaged.
I par cularly liked the video about Atuwa Omary, a young Zanzibar woman who took a job with the Mnemba Coral Reef Restora on Project.
Si ng in her bright pink and white co on khanga, a ny stud in her nose, she says: “I was told this is not a good job for a woman.”
But her mother encouraged her to apply and she got it.
Atuwa always loved swimming, but had to be taught to dive. Now she goes out in scuba gear with the men and dives to transplant corals to the new areas.
Her job not only helps restore Mnemba’s coral reefs but also gives her an income and enables her to send her young son to school, buy him books and a uniform.
And it is more than just a job to her
“When I see corals, fish, snails and aqua c life, I feel at peace.”
This is a cornerstone of repairing the environment, isn’t it, even if it’s only in small patches: finding workable solu ons and employing local people to help run them.
If enough of us do this in our own corners, imagine what can be achieved.
