Vultures and the Springboks
You may have thought last Saturday was the Springboks’ day, given their victory over arch opponents the All Blacks.
But the Springboks shared Saturday with vultures: It was Interna onal Vulture Awareness Day, designed to highlight what a rough me these birds have at the hands of humans. They are killed for the illegal medicine trade, or by farmers who poison carcasses to kill predators, or from crashing into high voltage electricity cables.
Of Africa’s 15 vulture species, 7 are facing ex nc on. Dreadful.
Vulture Day reminded me of a story about vulture poaching that I wrote while at The Star.
There had been a spate of vultures poisoned in the Kruger Park, but the rangers had not managed to find the culprits.
One day a er finding yet another group of vultures lying dead around a poisoned carcass, rangers were determined to catch whoever had done it. They followed the set of footprints that led away from the dead birds for some me, un l the footprints simply disappeared. The rangers were stumped. How had the guy vanished into thin air? They scouted around trying to pick up the tracks again, “cu ng for sign” as the cowboys used to say, peering behind bushes and around trees, but to no avail.
Then one ranger got lucky. While looking behind a bush growing in front of an enormous termite mound, he saw a hole in the mound. He crouched down and peered in. His jaw dropped.
He saw food, a plate and mug, matches and even a bed of blankets. It was clear someone was living inside the huge termite mound.
The poacher?
They later staked out the area and waited. A er some me a man appeared. He came walking along, then picked up a small branch and began brushing out his footprints, walking backwards towards his termite mound home, then ducked in and was gone.
How clever was that!
I don’t remember if the man had vulture parts on him or if they were inside the termite mound, but the evidence was there and he was arrested.
Didn’t help the dead vultures of course, but it might have saved some who would have been poisoned in the future by this cra y killer
Why do poachers target vultures? Because vulture body parts earn good money – par cularly among horse racing punters.
They put a bit of vulture under their pillows and hope to dream of the horse that will win the jackpot at the next day’s races.
If a vulture’s head or even just an eye are available, punters pay top dollar for these.
The reason? Well, because vultures seem to know when an animal is dying and start circling in the sky above, some people concluded that vultures could foretell the future. So some believe if they sleep on a piece of vulture, they too might be able to see the future.
And if it’s racing day tomorrow and they dream of the winning horse – bingo, a big win for them.
Let’s hope that belief is dying out.
Let’s also hope that farmers are more sussed about indiscriminate poisoning.
And let’s hope that there are s ll cra y rangers, willing to go that extra mile.

Notice of Event - Sunday 22 September 2024
The Lions Karoo to Coast Mountain Bike Challenge event is owned by the Lions Clubs of Knysna and Uniondale.
All proceeds from this event go to people in need in our area, with the Sightfirst Project and the South African Guide Dog Association being the primary beneficiaries at present. The first event took place in 1999
The event starts in Uniondale at 07:30 Cyclists will traverse the Prince Alfred's Pass before reaching Knysna via Kom se Pad, Simola and the Salt River Road. The cut off is at the Kom se Pad/Knysna turnoff at 14:30 and the finish cut off is at the Knysna High School field at 16:00.
MOTORISTS AND RIDERS TO RIDE WITH EXTREME CAUTION PLEASE!
The Pass CANNOT be closed to oncoming and other traffic on Sunday 22nd September, but we kindly encourage you to PLEASE STAY OFF the Pass and rider route on race day between 06:30 and 16:00.
The Knysna Municipality has partnered with the event to build a temporary bridge under the culvert on the N2 near Salt River - to minimise traffic interference on the National Road into Knysna. Riders will be allocated a single lane after the culvert until they turn right into Waterfront Drive and turn left onto the FINISH at the Knysna High School field, west of the Astron Garage. The first rider is expected in Knysna from around 10:00 and the final riders will be in town by approximately 16:30. Astron Garage WILL BE OPEN to trade with access from the east side only.
ROAD CLOSURES
Riders please note that the route is NOT CLOSED to oncoming traffic/residents.
Riders MUST stay left at all times and obey traffic officers.
Participants/supporters MAY NOT drive over the Prince Alfred's Pass /Kom se Pad / Gouna / Simola on race morning. The Pass will be closed by Traffic control on the Uniondale side by 06:30 on Sunday morning 22nd September. If you are not past this point by then - you will NOT be allowed through by Traffic.
Support vehicles MAY NOT drive back to Knysna via the Pass and are encouraged to drive via George to the finish. There are NO supporter view points on the route for safety reasons. There will be a traffic delay to leave Uniondale if you leave after 07:15 until around around 08:10 as traffic has to close the exit road while riders cycle out of Uniondale. We encourage you to have breakfast in Uniondale or leave before 07:15 if you are a supporter, to minimize waiting in your car
