Big Fat Cars Bad for Environment STOEP CHAT
I came across a new word this week: Mobesity.
At first I thought it might be short for “morbidly obese”, describing someone very overweight.
But no. It has to do with cars. Very fat, heavy motorcars.
I was immediately intrigued.
I have long been astonished at how cars have been ge ng bigger and bigger and wondered why
Some are so large you would think they were designed for a purpose other than ge ng from A to B. Fending off a charging rhino? A Mad Max a ack?
But these mobese vehicles are s ll just used for the school run, going to work, the golf course, supermarket - or any other ordinary trip.
So why are they so huge and heavy?
One can’t argue that safety features need more space because even small cars have airbags, crumple zones etc. And small cars can do long journeys just as well as big cars - and are more fuel efficient.
I think it comes down to marke ng and adver sing. Car manufacturers can charge you much more for big cars so they tell you “big is be er” –and you buy it, the idea and the car.
I read about mobesity in a Nature Briefing and learned that sadly, mobesity in electric vehicles is undermining their very purpose – to be beneficial for the environment, to help against climate change.
Oxford professor Chris an Brand – who coined the word mobesity to describe fat, heavy cars – says the move to electric vehicles is a cornerstone in global efforts to reduce climate change. Now 14% of new cars sold are electric.
That’s good isn’t it?
Yes and no. Good because electric vehicles, par cularly electric SUVs, are about three mes more energy efficient than diesel or petrol SUVs.
Bad, says Brand, because bigger, heavier electric SUVs need more resources to build, which increases their environmental footprint: more energy used in produc on and more emissions across the vehicle’s lifecycle.
Bigger electric SUVs can take bigger ba eries, so more demand for lithium, cobalt and other raw materials. Mining and processing these is energy intensive and “environmentally invasive” – which makes the very problems that electric cars are trying to solve, even worse.
And fa er vehicles mean greater wear on tyres and roads, releasing minute bits into the air that are bad for human health and the environment.
So it’s sad news really.
And here’s something else. Brand says the shi towards big, heavy cars like SUVs “represents the most profitable models for manufacturers, sold at a premium, for propor onally lower manufacturing costs”
So companies can make big, heavy cars for propor onally less than others – and then charge sky-high prices.
Who are the winners here, eh?
Good grief we are so gullible.
So what can be done? For a start, Brand says policy makers need to bring in regula ons that discourage produc on of mobese vehicles, and promote the most efficient, low emission vehicles.
And there must be incen ves for manufacturers to develop smaller electric vehicles.
Mmm. What about warnings on SUVs like cigare e packets?
“This vehicle is more harmful to the environment than a small car, and makes climate change worse.”
Oh my, wouldn’t that be just the cket!
