They Don’t Make ‘Em Like That Anymore.

I had to say goodbye to an old four-wheeled friend the other day – my 21-year old Toyota Tazz.

I’d had a prang and although she was not badly damaged, the insurance company would not repair her. Too old.

The tow truck guys said: “Just buy some new rims and panel beat the fender and it’s good to go!”

I was torn. I loved my lile tjorrie, we’d had some good adventures, and she just kept on going.

Every second person wanted to buy her. I oen found notes under my wipers saying: “I want to buy your car”

Every petrol pump guy wanted to buy her too.

“Ah mama!” one guy at my local ﬁlling staon used to say, “You’ve sll got my car!”

She was light on fuel, lovely to drive, and with the back seat down, I could ﬁt in a small cupboard.

She was so good on dirt roads – and rivers.

I remember taking a drive from Laingsburg to the Lile Karoo through Seweweekspoort, a beauful 17-km pass through the Swartberg Mountains - a bit of a spur-of-the-moment decision.

There were several river crossings, mostly with causeways, and I was surprised at how deep the water was. The Karoo had recently had rain but I never expected so much water.

When I came to one river crossing I got out to look. It was ﬂowing quite fast and the boom was covered with rocks and stones.

I was closer to the end of the poort than the beginning and really didn’t want to trek back. Just then a motorbike stopped on the opposite bank.

“Do you think it is safe to cross?” I yelled.

“Not sure, but I’m going to try.”

I watched as his bike went into the water. It was quite deep, but the loose rocks were the tricky bit and he had to put his foot down several mes.

When he reached me he gave a thumbs up and in I went.

Sho, that ﬁrst moment when you hear the water whooshing against the body and feel the uneven stones moving under the wheels. It was scary, but we made it. I was so proud of my Tazz.

As I came out of the poort I saw the road was blocked with a temporary barrier. I walked around to see why and found a sign on the other side that said: “Flooding. Road Closed/Pad Gesluit.”

I laughed! So the poort had been closed because of ﬂoodingbut no one had thought to put a sign on the Laingsburg side.

That made me even prouder of my car

So ja, it was a sad parng.

But on the bright side I know that so many people are mad about Tazzes that I am sure she will go to someone who will repair her and cherish her.

But I am cross with Toyota. Why on earth did they stop making the Tazz? Probably because they last so long – and Toyota cannot make lots of bucks from a car that just keeps on keeping on.

So a toast to my Tazz, wherever she is, and to all who drive in her!
