Stonehenge in the south of England is one of those really awe-inspiring places - giant stones arranged in an enormous 100m circle, some with huge stones on top – built thousands of years ago by people who had only basic, handmade tools.

I ﬁnd that extraordinary.

Most of these massive stones came from the surrounding area, and geological studies showed that some of the smaller ones came from Wales. That’s a prey long way to transport stones.

Now something even more startling has been discovered: Stonehenge’s massive six-ton altar stone came all the way from northern Scotland, a distance of 700km - almost the distance between Cape Town and PE.

That is truly astonishing. How did Neolithic people, living 4000 years ago, manage to get a stone that weighed six tons from the top of Scotland to the boom of England?

No one knows, but the publicaon of this ﬁnding in the journal Nature has got people really excited, not least because they say it shows that ancient Britons were a far more advanced society than researchers had thought.

The discovery was made by Anthony Clarke, a Welsh PhD student working at the University of Western Australia. He examined the chemical composion of the altar rock and the age of the minerals in it. Once this is known, it is like a “rock ﬁngerprint”. Sciensts can then match it with rocks around Britain. They found a match with the sandstone rocks in northeast Scotland.

Professor Nick Pearce, who was involved in the research, said in a BBC interview that this ﬁnding had come as a “shock”

“It blew our socks oﬀ. . .The Neolithic people must have been prey well connected, far more connected than people give them credit for. They must have been very well organised.”

Clarke said in the same interview: “Stonehenge seems to be the great Brish endeavour, involving all the diﬀerent people from all over the island.”

What was their reason for bringing a six-ton stone all the way from Scotland? Was this parcular sandstone regarded as special, and if so, why? Did they want a unique stone for the altar? And how on earth did they transport it?

There was a lot more forest in England 4000 years ago, and they would have had to cross several wide rivers without the beneﬁt of bridges, and plenty of very hilly terrain. Some say the trip would have taken a team of about 40 men, using a type of sled, a few years.

What I love is that the stones of Stonehenge are arranged to be aligned with the movements of the sun. They frame the sunrise at summer solsce and the sunset at the winter solsce.

As the Brish Museum says, the people who built Stonehenge were mainly farmers, so the changing seasons would have been of immense signiﬁcance to them, and it is likely they would have gathered at mid winter and mid summer to conduct rituals and ceremonies relang to the changing seasons.

It would be wonderful to know all the secrets of Stonehenge, but for the most part these giant stones keep their secrets.

WELCOME, Maggie Gawie, to our team at Pledge Nature Reserve!

Maggie is our first ever ‘gatekeeper’ and will be at our entry kiosk to welcome visitors to the reserve. We first met Maggie when she joined us as a volunteer on her day off work as a salesperson at the Waterfront. She was one of the core group of regulars at ‘Weeding Wednesdays’, clearing alien invasive vegetation that sprouted like hairs on a dog’s back after the Knysna fires in 2017. When the time came to appoint someone to welcome visitors, answer any questions, and sell entry permits and membership cards, we knew, with her friendly and kind demeanour, that she was perfect for the position. You might find her weeding and pruning too – old habits die hard!

Our opening times are from 8am till 5pm, every day Entry permits are R30 for adults and R10 for children under 12. For those who wish to visit often, yearly membership cards are available at R250 for individuals and R400 for families. Perfectly situated in the heart of Knysna, the reserve’s entrance, through the Oyster Walk Apartments, is accessible from the Main Road through the Milkwood Square building site, across from the Knysna Mall As the building project develops, our access point will move to Fitchat Street, but we will keep you posted about this here and on our social media pages.

For those unfamiliar with the reserve, we are a ten-hectare declared nature reserve, with Forest and Fynbos, streams and ponds, and beautiful views of the Heads. With altogether 5km of pathways, the lower area is level and easy to walk, and then a few inclines and steps lead to our upper viewpoint with picnic tables and benches scattered along the way First-time visitors often comment in awe on how absolute the change is from the hustle and bustle of town to being completely enveloped by nature after only a few steps into the reserve! Expect to hear and see some of the 101 species of birds observed, 360 species of plants, many insects, and if you are lucky, you might get a glimpse of our shy animals, Porcupine, Grysbokkie, and Cape Genet, and there is a good chance that the troop of inquisitive Vervet Monkeys that move through the reserve from time to time will be there to entertain you!
