Fewer, Skinnier Whales are Our Fault A friend from Kazakhstan came to stay last week, the first me she has been at the coast in five years.

She remembered watching whales in winter from our balcony overlooking False Bay, but was disappointed to see only two this me.

It was not just bad luck. Researchers have found that fewer whales than usual are coming up from the Antarc c to spend the winter along our coast, which is warmer and more sheltered and where they have their babies.

They have also found that the Southern Rights’ migratory routes are changing; that females are taking longer to have calves and the most startling of all, that whales are ge ng thinner.

Dr Els Vermeulen, research manager at the University of Pretoria’s Whale Unit in Hermanus, has said these changes are clearly related to their food sources.

“They feed mainly on krill so finding thinner whales indicates they are not finding the krill densi es they used to find,” she said.

Krill are ny crustaceans that look like miniature shrimps, and are found deep in the Southern Ocean I’ve eaten krill in Thailand that was mixed into fried noodles. They’re okay if you like shellfish, which I don’t.

But whales do, so do seals, penguins, albatrosses, squid and several fish species. Southern Rights eat thousands in just one mouthful.

Some say that without krill, the Southern Ocean food web will collapse.

Krill occur in huge underwater “swarms” in the Antarc c region, o en several kilometres wide and 100m deep. They feed on phytoplankton – microscopic, single-cell plants.

Now scien sts say krill densi es are ge ng less, which means less food for the whales.

The underlying cause appears to be climate change. The krill’s life cycle is closely linked to the ice, but now both polar regions are warming faster than any area on Earth, and Antarc ca’s ice is mel ng at a rate of 150 billion tons a year.

Whales feed on krill in summer, building up their fat reserves before swimming thousands of kilometres to South Africa for the winter.

Less krill means thinner whales - and this affects their ability to have calves.

“If whales are underweight, they will abort their pregnancies the same as other mammals and humans do, to save the life of the mother,” Vermeulen said.

It’s not just climate change that is a threat to whales’ food source: there is also a growing commercial krill fishing industry.

Scien sts are trying to get new marine protected areas declared to protect the krill, but Russia and China have blocked these a empts.

So if you are seeing fewer whales this winter, you know why: climate change.

O en these issues seem beyond our ability to solve, but we know that each of us contributes to climate change: every me we drive a car, take a flight, use the tumble drier, buy new clothes, eat red meat etc, we are emi ng greenhouse gases that cause climate change.

It may seem fu le to reduce our individual ac vi es that cause climate change, but if we all did, it would make a massive impact – not just for whales, but for the en re planet.

If that’s not worth trying to do, what is?
