Pangolins and Scaly Poachers
I was so happy to read last week that researchers had found a giant pangolin in Senegal that they thought had become ex nct in that country.
It was discovered in the Niokolo-Koba Na onal Park in a camera-trap programme, the first me the animal had been photographed since 1967.
What a thrill, par cularly in this age of rampant poaching and habitat destruc on.
I have never seen a pangolin in the wild. The chances of doing so are becoming slimmer because this harmless creature is now the most trafficked mammal in the world.
Why? Because people in China and Vietnam believe pangolin scales can cure all sorts of illnesses. It’s nonsense of course, because the scales are simply made of kera n, the same as fingernails. May as well chew your nails.
Pangolins, also called scaly anteaters, eat mainly ants and termites, and curl up into a ball when they are threatened.
The name pangolin is from the Malay word pengguling meaning “one who rolls up”
I have seen photographs of lions trying to get at a pangolin, but once it has rolled up into a ball, they can’t.
But humans can. They just bend down and pick them up.
In 2017 Chinese officials seized a shipping container with hundreds of bags of pangolin scales. They es mated the scales represented 20,000 dead pangolins. How can any species survive that kind of onslaught?
There are eight species of pangolin, four in Africa and four in Asia, and all of them are cri cally endangered. Interna onal trade is banned, but illegal syndicates that deal in rhino horn and ivory take pangolins too. They don’t care about the plight of wild animals, just the money they can make.
Although I have never seen a pangolin in the wild, I have seen one alive. It was in Mae Hong Son in northwest Thailand, right on the Myanmar border
I was backpacking in Thailand and we were in Mae Hong Son to start a 6-day hike to Chiang Mai through the forested hills.
I heard a commo on outside the guest house and saw one of my group remonstra ng with a local man who had brought a pangolin to sell for dinner.
She was trying to tell him that pangolins were endangered and that he should release it, but in the end she decided to buy it herself and set it free.
She got hold of some red nail polish and asked one of the staff to write on its back: “Do Not Kill” in Thai.
Then she walked into the forest and released it.
I’m not sure her plan worked. The red nail polish might have made it easier to spot, but her heart was in the right place. At least she saved it from the pot for a while.
Some say we are living in the midst of the sixth great ex nc onbut this one is caused by only one species: humans.
Fortunately there are many who are figh ng against species destruc on. Who knows who will win, but as Theodore Roosevelt said: “Wildlife and its habitat cannot speak, so we must, and we will.”
