Olympics Then and Now
Sadly I missed the opening of the Paris Olympics, but from what I have seen in news snippets, it seems that it was really a fun ceremony. Quite brave of the French to use their en re city as the backdrop for the ceremony, rather than the tradi onal stadium.
Do you know in what order countries appear in the Olympics’ Parade of Na ons? I learned this week that Greece is always first because it was the ancient home of the Olympics. The host city is always last and the host country of the next Olympics is second last. All the other countries appear in between in alphabe cal order, but using their names in the language of the host country
So because Germany is called Allemagne in French it would be near the front of the parade in France, but because it is called Tyskland in Swedish and Saksa in Finnish, it would be near the back if the Olympics were held in Sweden or Finland. This makes the order appear a li le random.
And the reason the five Olympic rings are black, blue, red, yellow and green? Because when they are placed on a white background, they represent the colours of all na onal flags worldwide. I had never realised that every flag in the world was made of a combina on of only these colours.
There is quite a bit about the background and history of the Olympics in the news now. University of Stellenbosch professor Francois Cleophas wrote in The Conversa on last week about the first Africans to take part in the Olympics. It made me sad.
He said the first modern Olympic Games were held in Greece in 1896. No African countries took part in those days, but, he says, there is a li le known story about two African men who did take part in the Olympics in 1904. It was the year the United States hosted the games in the city of St Louis.
The men were Jan Mashiani and Len Taunyane and they came from what is now South Africa. South Africa did not exist in 1904 because the region was a Bri sh colony
These two men were brought to the US as part of the St Louis World Fair, which formed part of that year’s Olympics.
The fair held compe ons “for indigenous people of different con nents under the tle Anthropology Days”.
Racism was rife in those days, reflected in the tle of events at the fair that were called: “athle c events for savages” Horrible.
Anyway the men competed in a 40km race – in 32°C heat –along a dust road. Taunyane finished 9th and Mashiani 12th. I wonder what went through their minds about the whole thing. Happily those dark days are over
Speaking of African athletes, I am roo ng for Faith Kipyegon to win the 1500m again. She is one of only three athletes, with Tatyana Kazankina and Sebas an Coe, who have won two Olympic gold medals for the 1500m tle.
If she wins it in the Paris Olympics, she will become the first athlete, male or female, to achieve this in the history of the event. Wouldn’t that be great!
