Pig’s Eyes and Dirty Intestines on the Menu

I’m sure some of you have been in foreign countries where you were never quite sure what food you were ordering at a restaurant or take-away

In Thailand some years ago we stopped at a pavement café for breakfast. As I was recovering from a stomach bug, I wanted something plain. There was an “egg roll” on the menu, so I asked the waiter if I could have the roll, but without the egg. He looked at me amazed: “Not possible.”

Poinng at the menu I said: “This is an egg roll, yes?” “Yes.”

“So please bring me the roll, but without the egg.” He became emphac: “No, no, not possible!”

Aer a few more tries, I gave up and said okay bring the egg roll. I thought I would simply scrape oﬀ the egg and eat the roll.

When it arrived, we started laughing. The “egg roll” turned out to be an omelee! The poor waiter must have thought this foreigner was nuts. How can she order an omelee without eggs?

We spent two months in Thailand and got to know many delicious dishes. We also saw plenty of weird things Thais eat.

We bought a lot of street food from vendors with big cauldrons of rice or noodles and a range of cut up meat and vegetables on display. You selected what you wanted and they made it into a tasty sr-fry

In Thailand’s non-touristy northeast many vendors also had pig’s eyes on sale, chicken’s eyes, beetles and what looked like cockroaches, all beaufully arranged. I was not adventurous enough to try them.

Regarding not knowing what you are going to get, my brother had an interesng experience in France.

He and his wife and friends had stopped at a ny restaurant that was part of an old water mill in the Chablis region. They were deciding what to order – the menu was in French – when Charles saw a waiter going by with a plate of sausages. He loves sausages so he pointed to plate and indicated he would have the same. When it arrived he tucked in.

“I always cut sausages length ways but when I did that, the whole thing started to unravel like it was ﬁlled with elasc bands. And the snk was unbelievable. Like elasc bands that had been lying in a sepc tank.”

The others started giggling.

“I didn’t know what it was but there was no way I could eat it. The waiter came back and said: ‘A leetle beet strong for your stomach?’”

Indeed.

It was called andouillees de canard which are sausages ﬁlled with the intesnes of a duck.

“But it is the back end of the duck and the intesnes are uncleaned, so you know what it smelt like.”

His wife Sharon kindly gave him the rest of her salmon.

“We were in hysterics at his expression when these things started unraveling,” she said.

I admire the French for consuming all the parts of an animal. No waste.

Sll, if I were in a French restaurant with no English menus, I think I would say: “Je suis végétarienne.”
