Burrowing Dinosaurs and Swamp Creatures
I really enjoy reading about quirky creatures from the ancient past.
This week I learned about a giant kangaroo that lived 2.5 million years ago and was a whopping 1.8m tall. I’ve heard that kangaroos “box” but apparently they don’t really. They use their forearms to hold their opponents and then kick them with their back legs. I imagine a kick from such a giant could crack some bones.
But here’s the strange thing: this kangaroo, unlike its modern rela ve, did not hop but walked on all fours. Scien sts found its anklebones were not designed to take the stress of hopping.

Another interes ng discovery is a dinosaur that lived in burrows. This dinosaur, called Fona herzogae, was about the size of a dog. It was discovered in the USA and lived 99 million years ago when the land was warm and wet with ac ve volcanoes.
Palaeontologists say this li le dinosaur had many of the same features as modern burrowing animals, such as large biceps and strong hind legs. They found several in small “bundles” which they believe represent a group of the dinosaurs living together in burrows.
The discovery I liked best was a creature that lived 300 million years ago – 40 million years before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. It was bigger than a person, had four short legs, a head that was half a metre wide and jaws with huge, interlocking teeth.
Scien sts describe it as a “swamp thing” that probably hung out near the bo om of swamps and lakes.
Palaeontologist Jason Pardo was quoted saying: “It’s got a big, flat, toilet-shaped head, which allows it to open its mouth and suck in prey. It has these huge fangs. The whole front of its mouth is just giant teeth. It’s a big predator.”
This ancient creature, Gaiasia jennyae, was found in Namibia.
It lived at a me when Africa, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Antarc ca and the Indian subcon nent were all part of one enormous landmass called Gondwana.
The swamp creature is a tetrapod, a group of ancient creatures that evolved and split into groups that later became rep les, amphibians, birds and mammals – and eventually humans.
What is really interes ng is that this par cular animal from Namibia belongs to a group of tetrapods that did not evolve with their mates. They stuck around exactly as they were for another 40 million years, and then disappeared.
I wonder why?
I think I have told you about the me I worked as a palaeontologist technician at a dig near Langebaan, where I found part of a bear skull. It was bigger than a grizzly bear.
Later two other fossil bears were found at that site, but they are the only fossil bears ever discovered in Africa.
Again, I wonder why? If bears once existed in Africa, why have only three fossils ever been discovered?
Perhaps future scien sts will find answers to such ques ons.
Meanwhile we’ll just have to agree with Shakespeare that: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Hora o, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”
