Storm Surges a Sign of Things to Come.

As I write this here at Noetzie the sky is dark and the sea a mass of churning green and white as the wind whips up waves that roar right up to our boundary walls.

The beach has disappeared.

Chairs skid across the deck and although it’s icy because of snow on the mountains, we dare not light the fire because last night the wind blasted down the chimney, sending smoke and sparks onto the floor.

We had a full house at the weekend to celebrate a friend’s 60th birthday party and had a great me. But on Sunday night the wind started and was howling around the beach co age. The cold front and storm surge was on its way.

In the predawn dark on Monday my brother went to move his car off the beach. (We have ORV permits.) The sea was already creeping up and his back tyres were in wet sand.

“I tried to reverse but it didn’t move. Luckily there s ll was a patch of dry sand in front so I could move forward towards the rocks and then back out.”

A few hours later he would not have been so lucky. The waves are powerful and the beach has gone.

The level of Noetzie beach, like many others in the Southern Cape, is s ll almost two metres lower than normal a er being scoured out by the massive level-9 storm surge last September. We were all hoping that the summer south-easter would deposit sand back onto the beach, but only a li le came back. So with the lower beach level, the waves come higher, scour out more sand, and so it goes on.

Why am I wri ng about this? Well, because it worries me. This is the third storm surge in the last nine months and I fear that this may be a taste of the “new normal”. No beach anymore, just sea.

No vehicle access and maybe even the co ages eaten away by wave ac on over me, like those photographs one sees of half a house on a cliff top.

It is a reality of global warming that life won’t stay the same.

Another reality is that storm surges are becoming more frequent and more powerful.

But all is not gloom and doom. Some people are taking ac on to help reduce climate change and we can take heart from that.

Just today’s headlines are encouraging: The new UK labour government has scrapped the Tories’ ban on wind farms. In China wind energy is now the second largest source of electricity.

In Germany scien sts have created an “anode-free, sodium solid-state ba ery” heralding cheaper, fast-charging, high-capacity ba eries for renewable energy storage and electric vehicles. That’s brilliant.

And here at home our new energy minister says he wants “exponen al” renewable energy growth and will accelerate South Africa’s shi to renewables “aggressively”. Way to go Ramokgopa!

All this puts a smile on my dial and gives me hope.

We s ll have me to change, and the me to change is now.

So here’s to all those scien sts, lobbyists, poli cians and anyone else who is working towards that change.
