Dion George Must Tackle Aliens The Southern Cape is facing a water and fire crisis because of the massive spread of alien vegeta on, says Dr Guy Preston.

“The Southern Cape is in trouble. It’s probably the worst area for aliens in the whole of South Africa. Unless ac on is taken now to clear aliens, the Southern Cape is facing catastrophic fires and a water crisis.”

Some of you may have heard Preston make these alarming statements when he gave talks at Knysna and Ple recently.

I caught up with him this week.

Preston, now re red, was the deputy-director at the Department of Environment Affairs in charge of several environmental programmes, including Working for Water.

Working for Water is about cu ng down alien vegeta on especially pines, wa les and gums - that soak up water much faster than indigenous vegeta on. If you cut down these “thirsty” alien trees, more water becomes available, hence the name Working for Water.

Preston says the massive spread of alien vegeta on in the George, Knysna and Ple areas is the biggest threat to our water security.

You have all probably seen pines that have “escaped” from planta ons and now cover huge sec ons of mountains from George to Humansdorp and beyond. These mountain slopes are our water catchment areas where the rain runs off into rivers and dams. It is this water that municipali es use to supply towns and ci es.

But if you have thousands of pines, wa les, gums and other alien trees on mountain slopes, they will suck up a lot of rain water before it can get to the rivers and dams. The more aliens, the less water there is for everyone.

“The sooner you clear the catchments, the less it will cost. Leave it, the aliens will spread, and the costs will escalate enormously.

You don’t need an IQ higher than Donald Trump to see that.”

And then there is fire. The more aliens there are, the ho er and fiercer fire will burn - yet all around Knysna there are houses with pines, gums and wa les growing around them. They may just as well be surrounded by boxes of giant firelighters.

“One might be forgiven for thinking some Knysna residents have not experienced wild fires,” Preston said.

One house that sold for R30-million has alien trees growing all around it. Preston said if the owner spent just 0.1% of that R30m to clear the alien trees, he would help fireproof his house.

Fire causes many aliens to germinate, so there are a lot more a er a fire than before.

Preston said another problem was if you don’t clear aliens, you may find that insurance won’t cover you.

The damage from the 2017 fires was over R3-billion – the biggest insurance payout for a single event in South Africa.

Na onal government needs to take ac on now and get the Working for Water programme running properly.

Dion George, the new Minister of Forestry Fisheries and Environment, is a Knysna man and has a financial background.

Perhaps he will understand that money spent on clearing aliens now will not only reduce the fire risk and increase water supplies, but will save the government money in the long run.
