What’s in an Elephant’s Name?

Elephant researchers in Kenya have discovered that wild elephants have their own names and use them when they address each other

I ﬁnd that quite extraordinary. Animals naming themselves!

I have spent many happy hours watching elephants, and I know that the deep rumbles elephants make are their way of communicang with each other, but I never for a moment thought some of those rumbles were one ellie calling another ellie by its name.

But a team of elephant researchers say they had long suspected that elephants may address one another with “name-like calls”, so they tested the idea. They followed ellies in Kenya, recording the sounds they made and nong which ellie made the call and to whom it was “speaking”

Some elephant rumbles are so deep that humans cannot hear them, but recording equipment can pick them up.

“We thought that if elephants have names, they most likely say them in rumbles, so we focused on these calls,” the researchers said in an arcle in The Conversaon this week.

Because of the huge task of unravelling all the informaon that is conveyed in the rumbles – age, sex, emoonal state and behavioural context – the researchers used a machine-learning computer trained to idenfy which elephant was receiving each rumble call. They found that elephants had diﬀerent calls for each elephant, just as if the ellies each had a name.

Then they wanted to see if the elephants would respond to their name. There is a lovely video they made of an elephant listening to a recording of a rumble sent to it by another elephant.

When the recorded message of rumbles ﬂoats out over the bush, the elephant’s ears pricks up “as it hears a friend or family member calling its name”. Then suddenly it starts to walk towards the microphone, making loud rumblings and ﬂapping its ears. It was responding to hearing its name from the microphone!

So this makes me wonder about an incident when we were in Etosha Game Reserve 18 months ago.

I knew about elephants communicang by deep rumbles, but at the me I didn’t know about them using individual names.

I was sing at a waterhole in one of the camps watching a herd of elephants drinking and splashing around. When the herd started to wander oﬀ, I thought I would try out a few rumbles.

Well, all the elephants kept on walking, except for one young bull. He stopped and looked at me, then trumpeted and walked towards me quite fast, ﬂapping his ears, trumpeng again.

Tourists further away started snapping photos, but I sat dead sll, quite nervous - although there was a stone wall topped with electric fencing between me and the elephant.

It came right up to the wall and looked at me, scking its trunk out.

Needless to say I did not dare make another rumble but sat there rigid. Eventually he lost interest and ambled oﬀ

With this new research in mind, I now wonder if my rumbles actually meant something, and if so, what it was.

I’ll never know.

And I don’t think I will try rumbling ellies again.
