Just read a horrifying ar cle in The Guardian about the surge of cocaine flooding into Europe, with a street value between R148bn and R205bn a year.
It described the cocaine industry as “dripping in human misery”
Brought back memories of my close-up experience with a drug cartel in the Peruvian jungle in 1987.
I was on a 3-month hiking trip. Six of us had hiked from the Andes to the jungle town of Iquitos.
It was a steamy, muddy town, with not another foreigner in sight. We found a grubby place to stay and showered for the first me in weeks.
Suddenly our door was flung open and about eight young men burst in, brandishing guns, shou ng in Spanish. They searched our rucksacks then pushed us into the corridor. Our Spanish was poor and we did not understand what they wanted. There was a bakkie parked outside. They shouted that we must get in. We didn’t move un l one of them fired a gun into the ceiling. I don’t know if you have heard a gun go off right next to you, but it is deafening – and terrifying. We got onto the bakkie. Two men stood against the cab holding automa c weapons. We drove at high speed down a jungle road. By now we were sure these were part of a drug cartel. I thought they were going to kill us. We were so scared we could not look at each other We stopped at a building and were told to get out and wait.
A guard saw Henry’s guitar, pointed his gun at him and said: “Sing!”
It was bizarre. Henry asked us to sing with him and played Sloop John B. The chorus: “I feel so broke up I wanna go home” never felt so real.
Eventually an older guy arrived and told us we had to leave the area. They took us to a jungle airstrip and le us in a crumbling building with an armed guard.
That night we heard an aircra approach. The guard ordered us to lie face down. The plane landed and we assumed it took on a cargo of cocaine, and flew off.
The next day another bunch of gun-wielding men arrived, ripped the films out of our cameras and ordered us into a bakkie with the same guards. We were taken to a pont on the Rio Negro. There they ordered a lorry driver to take us across the river. We climbed into the back, under a tarpaulin, and drove for hours, no idea where we were going.
Steve piped up: “How come Harrison Ford makes this stuff seem exci ng?”
We were eventually dumped at an unknown jungle town at night –relieved but shaken.
Back in Lima, I met a US man in a bar who was part of the US fight against the coke trade in Peru. I asked him how much danger we had really been in.
He looked at me and said: “Ma’am, you’re lucky to be alive.”
Back in Joburg I told a friend the story.
“All that violence just so some guys can shove it up their noses to feel good for a half hour.”
