The Ocean Needs You

World Ocean Day on June 8th got me thinking about all the happy mes I have spent in and on the sea.

When we were lile, we were not allowed to swim in the sea without our parents so while waing for them we played on the beach and had lots of fun.

One game was that the edge of the wave was electric so you had to jump over it or get “electrocuted”. Another was to be brave enough to put your finger into a sea anemone and feel the tentacles close on your skin.

When we were older we swam in the sea oen, and spring des were big excitement. The sea at Noetzie is on the open coast, so the breakers are powerful and can knock you tumbling head over heels, seawater up your nose and in your ears.

Sll older, wearing a bikini at spring de was a hazard, and one oen surfaced aer a parcularly powerful breaker with your bikini top around your neck.

Then there were the wonderful yacht trips on the ocean –down the coast from Durban to Cape Town with a hecc storm off the Wild Coast, and the Rio Race across the Atlanc where we were more oen than not becalmed. It felt as if we were in the centre of a giant saucer of ocean, nothing but water as far as the eye could see. It is difficult to describe the feeling of not seeing land for three weeks. Changes your brain a bit.

And the magnificent trip to Antarcca, through the Roaring Fores and Furious Fiies with storms whipping up swells as high as the ship’s bridge. Serious!

My favourite spot was in the researchers’ lookout cabin on top of the bridge. I remember one morning feeling watched and I turned to see a magnificent albatross hanging in the air, staring at me. I was thrilled.

Of course the ocean is about much more than having fun: it drives our weather and climate by absorbing over 90% of the sun’s heat which is then moved around the earth by currents. Phytoplankton, microscopic plants in the sea, produce 50% of the world’s oxygen, and the ocean plays a key role in our water cycle.

And then there is the way we use it: it transports most of the world’s goods, produces 15% of the world’s protein and yields oil and minerals.

But through polluon and climate change, we are harming the ocean, damaging our life-support system. World Ocean Day’s aim is to “catalyse collecve acon” to help restore a healthy ocean.

Three ways World Ocean Day organisers suggest we can help: tell the government, directly or on social media, to 1. sign and rafy the High Seas Treaty, 2. take strong acon to establish a global plascs treaty, 3. support a moratorium on destrucve deep-sea mining.

I think oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle is right when she says: “Many of us ask: ‘What can I, as one person, do?’ But history shows us that everything, good or bad, starts because somebody does something – or does not do something.”
