Today I want to chat about ro ng pigs.
Sounds a tad gross nê, but it’s actually really interes ng.
The decaying pigs are part of a University of Cape Town research project set up by taphonomists - scien sts who study the changes to a body a er death.
Researcher Victoria Gibbon wrote about her work in The Conversa on: “When the police recover skeletonised, burnt or heavily decomposed bodies, they need forensic experts to make sense of what they’ve found. One important ques on in such cases is: when did the person die?”
We’ve all read crime novels or watched TV dramas where a body is found and the cops ask the pathologist exactly that: “How long has she been dead, doc?”
Some countries allow scien sts to study decaying human corpses at “body farms”, using donated bodies, but many countries, including South Africa, don’t allow this. So local researchers use pigs instead because they have anatomical similari es to humans.
One UCT project looked specifically at the effect of scavengers on a body’s decomposi on. They took three dead pigs, kept one in a cage to prevent animals ge ng at it, and the others were le in the Cape Flats veld. They set up cameras ac vated by movement and found that the Cape grey mongoose came to scavenge every day on the carcasses. The carcasses took just 14 days to become skeletons, whereas the one in the cage took 93 days.
But here is the really interes ng bit: police called in these UCT researchers a er they had found a human skeleton on the Cape Flats. Gibbon said they immediately no ced that the hands were missing. Then they saw mongoose tracks and poo around the skeleton.
They analysed the poo and found clothing fibres that matched those on the dead person.
They knew from their research that mongooses took small bits of the pigs’ carcasses away to eat them under cover, so they scouted around and found a tunnel in the vegeta on leading to the mongoose’s burrow. There they found most of the hand bones and the dead man’s watch.
“Armed with these details, as well as our es mates of how long the corpse had been there, it was possible for the police to iden fy the person,” Gibbon wrote.
Without the research showing that a mongoose could reduce a corpse to a skeleton in just 14 days, police would probably not have suspected that the iden ty of the skeleton could have been someone who had been missing for just two weeks.
In another experiment the UCT scien sts dressed six dead pigs in clothing and le them in the veld in secure places to decompose.
They found that pigs dressed in thicker winter clothing decayed more slowly, whereas those in lighter summer clothing decayed faster.
A UCT electrical engineer helped design sensors to put into the pigs’ bodies to measure how their bodies dried out on the Cape Flats.
In summer they dried out quickly and became mummified in 30 days.
In winter they lost 20kg of their weight but never became skeletons. Fascina ng and important work. Who would have thought dead pigs could help cops iden fy murder vic ms?
