Authorities: the Good the Bad and the Ugly.

Isn’t it fantasc that rescue workers found a man alive aer being buried for 116 hours under the rubble of the collapsed building in George?

It’s incredible that Gabriel Guambe survived for almost 5 days. He must be tough - and healthy – to have defied death. In the video clip taken in hospital he certainly did not look like a man who had been trapped under rubble for days.

“I’m okay guys, I’m okay now. Thank you. God bless you guys.”

And hats off to disaster manager head Gerard Oo and all the rescue workers from different sectors who did not give up looking for survivors – and to the dog Abby and her handler sergeant Willie Visser for finding Gabriel.

The death toll was 32 at the me of wring. It is appalling that such a thing could happen. I hope invesgaons reveal those at fault.

South Africans are good at dealing with disasters. Remember the devastang Garden Route fires in 2017 and how everyone, authories and volunteers, rallied to help? As they did with the floods in KZN, fires in Cape Town, oil spills along the coast.

I think it has to do with disasters being finite: they have a beginning and an end. People seem beer able to cope with that.

It is far more difficult to tackle the “long-term” disasters like poverty and hunger that never seem to end. No maer how many people one feeds this week, they will sll be hungry next week and next year.

The other Garden Route news item that struck me was the High Court verdict that set aside the appointment of Knysna’s municipal manager Mr Ombali Sebola. The court found that the council’s decision to appoint him in January last year was “null and void”.

In effect, his appointment has been scrapped and the council must re-adverse the post.

The court found that the council’s process of appoinng Mr Sebola had been “riddled” with flaws.

I have never met Mr Sebola, and he may well be a nice guy, but what is definitely not nice is that the Knysna council did not follow the correct process in appoinng the town’s most senior official.

A municipal manager’s posion is extremely important. He or she is the administrave head and oversees the enre municipal administraon.

It saddens me that Knysna council could not get such a straighorward process right. How do they expect their municipality to funcon properly if their appointment of the person at the top is “riddled” with flaws?

And what a waste of me and public money spent on fighng the maer in court when the right thing would simply have been to say: “Sorry, we messed up. We’ll start again.”

So, two events on the Garden Route: both bad, but one, the rescue operaon in George, handled so well by the authories.

The other, the flawed appointment of Knysna’s municipal manager, took a High Court judge to order the council to re-adverse the post and effecvely start from scratch.

Let’s hope Knysna Council now does the right thing.

That’s all that cizens ask of policians: do your jobs - and do them properly.
