Doctor Orangutan

I was really ckled to read in Nature this week that researchers had seen a wild orangutan treat a nasty open wound on his face with a medicinal plant.

And it healed beaufully!

The orangutan lives in the Gunung Leuser Naonal Park in Indonesia where researchers have been studying these big apes for 21 years. He moved into the naonal park in 2009 when he was sll young.

Researchers named him Rakus - “greedy” in Indonesian - aer they watched the newcomer devour every flower on a large gardenia bush.

In 2021 Rakus was big enough to challenge other males and was soon seen fighng over territory and establishing dominance. (So human that, isn’t it?)

Aer one fight a field assistant noced that Rakus had a wound on his cheek, just under his eye, where his skin had been ripped open.

Researchers then saw the orangutan eang the leaves and stem of a creeper called akar kuning, a plant orangutans hardly ever eat but one that is well known to local people for its medicinal qualies. They use it to treat a variety of ailments, including some serious condions like diabetes, dysentery and malaria.

This is the amazing bit: aer the orangutan had eaten some of the plant, he then put several leaves in his mouth and chewed them but didn’t swallow them. Aer a while, he put his fingers into his mouth, took out a gollop of the leafy-juice and smeared it over his open wound. He did this several mes.

Finally, he took the mashed up leaves from his mouth and spread them over the open wound like a poulce.

The next day he ate some more of the medicinal plant. Eight days aer he had been injured, his wound was completely healed.

How’s that?

Researchers tested the plant and found it contained an-bacterial, an-fungal and an-inflammatory compounds.

They said this was the first me it had been scienfically documented that an animal had used a plant with medicinal properes to treat a wound.

Orangutans and chimpanzees are apparently the most intelligent of the great apes. Dr Jane Goodall’s research on chimps in Tanzania, where she saw them making crude but effecve tools, meant the textbooks had to be rewrien. Unl then humans had been regarded as the only primate capable of making tools.

Chimps also have a mischievous sense of humour, as I found out when doing a story on the old Tygerberg Zoo.

I was riding in the bakkie of zoo owner John Spence while photographer Garth rode in the open back.

As we drove past the chimp’s enclosure John said: “I hope your photographer’s camera bag is waterproof.”

Next thing Garth yelped as he was showered with water

A big male chimp sat on the fence looking pleased.

John laughed: “He does that when ever a bakkie drives past. He fills his mouth with water and sprays it onto whoever is sing in the back.”

Garth took it in good humour. As he said, news photographers get used to the unexpected.

“But I am probably the only news photographer that has been water-bombed by a chimp.”
