I read recently that 40% of Millennials and Genera on-Z say they don’t want to have children.
Some cite the rapidly rising cost of living as a reason, others don’t want to disrupt careers, but a startling new reason has emerged: anxiety about climate change.
In 2021 researchers interviewed 10,000 young people from Australia, Brazil, Finland, France, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, Portugal, the UK and USA.
Of these 40% said they were reluctant to have children because of the climate crisis, 60% said they were “very or extremely worried” about climate change and 75% agreed with the statement “the future is frightening”
One 23-year-old woman from the Philippines said because of rising sea levels, “I grew up being afraid of drowning in my bedroom”
Their fears are en rely understandable.
We are already living with the beginning of climate change –more powerful and more frequent floods, hurricanes, wildfires, droughts, heat waves, water shortages, crop damage etc, and yet the average global temperature increase is only 1.1°C higher than it was before the Industrial Revolu on.
What will it be like when it goes over 2°C?
And it will, because greenhouse gas emissions are increasing and fossil fuel companies con nue to drill for more oil and gas and mine coal. Governments don’t stop them. In fact most governments, including our own, give these rich fossil fuel companies subsidies from our taxes.
That is so twisted – forcing ci zens to pay corpora ons to make climate change worse.
Other research shows that young people are not only worried about what kind of future their children would have, but also whether it’s morally right to bring a child into a world they know is going to be tougher than the one we live in today.
Difficult choice – and sad.
By the way, I had to look up when Millennials and Gen-Zers were born so here it is in case you were also unsure:
Genera on Z: born 1997 to 2012: aged today between 12 and 27.
Millennials: born 1981 to 1996: aged today 28 to 43.
Some others, just for fun:
Genera on X: born 1965 to 1980: aged 44 to 49.
Baby Boomers 2: 1955 to 1964; aged 60 to 69.
Baby Boomers 1: 1946 to 1954: aged 70 to 78.
Back to climate anxiety.
Most of those surveyed blamed their governments for inac on in tackling climate change - and they are right.
But you know, it is elec on me, and this presents an opportunity to ensure poli cians realise that we are serious about holding them to account about climate change.
Check out their party manifestos online, see what they say about climate change – probably generalised promises - and ask them to put in wri ng exactly how they intend tackling climate change, especially what steps, with a me frame, they will take to move our electricity genera on from over 90% coal to mostly renewables. You could write a one-le er-fits-all.
