Puffies Locked in Combat

Most of you will probably have seen a puff adder at least once in your lives.

But how many of you have seen puff adders fighng?

It’s very rare to witness this, but Acon Ads owner Julie was lucky enough to see exactly that at Noetzie last week.

She had to leave work early to sort out a workman at home. As she approached her house she saw something in the middle of the road.

“When I got closer I saw there were two puff adders wrapped around each other, writhing about in the road. At first I thought they were mang.”

She got out of her Landy and walked a bit closer.

“Then I could see that they were two males, because males have longer, thinner tails than females, which have stubby tails. They were very strong, writhing around together, pushing each other’s heads down. But they never opened their mouths. I’ve never seen snakes fighng before and I felt so lucky to see them.”

Julie said the snakes were very evenly matched, both the same size, so the fight showed no signs of stopping.

“It was so interesng. But then I realised that it was nearly me for the builders to drive home from the beach and I was worried that they might drive over the snakes, so I thought I should move them out of the road.”

Julie is a registered snake catcher and carries her snake catching hook in the Landy.

“I took my hook and went up to them, but then thought it was not such a bright idea to do this in my sandals. I might be so focussed on catching one snake that the other one might pik me. I had never seen fighng snakes before so I wasn’t sure how they would react.”

She got back into her Landy, drove slowly forward and then leaned out of the window and picked up one of the snakes in her snake catching hook.

“Usually snakes are quite floppy when you pick them up, but this one was rigid with his head up. Maybe he thought he had won the fight.”

Haha, like a winning athlete looking around at applauding spectators.

She drove forward and lowered the puffie into the vegetaon.

“I think he wanted to come back but I nudged him with my hook and said: ‘No, you must go now, shoo!’”

He did.

Then she reversed back and picked up the other one and put him into the vegetaon about 10m away

Julie was puzzled because if the snakes were fighng over a female, it was very late in the season to do so, as they usually mate in spring and summer

“Perhaps male puff adders fight over territory, I don’t know Whatever the reason, it was an honour to be able to watch them.

I felt so lucky.”

And the snakes were lucky too. As Julie says, there are many people who would drive over a snake on purpose.

“I think it’s because of fear. When people are scared of things, they want to kill them.”

Happily, these two puffies lived to tell the tale.
