It was the first me Khonkhobe had won the men’s 56km ultra marathon, but it was the fi h consecu ve win for Gerda, who broke her own record of 3:29:06 to finish in 3:26:54.

Then there were the two Cape Town volunteer firemen Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan, who ran the 21km half marathon in full firefigh ng kit - plus their 10kg breathing apparatus.

You can imagine the heat inside those thick firemen’s clothes.

Their aim was to raise awareness - and money - for the Volunteer Wildfire Services.

I chuckled at Carelse’s comment to EWN saying the race was fun only for the first 500m.

“A er there were no media, we were swearing at each other.”

And then there were those who ran to raise funds for the SPCA. Last year one of them ran in a yellow “cat suit” with hood, ki y ears and whiskers.

I haven’t heard how much they raised this year, but last year they raised R160,000.

Another Two Oceans story that warms my heart is about a dear friend Ken. Ken was crazy about sport – but as a spectator only.

A real couch potato.

One day he was driving in Joburg when a car ran a red light and smashed into his door.

The impact was so severe that it ruptured his aorta – the biggest artery in the body. Most people with a ruptured aorta don’t survive, but in Ken’s case, there were a series of lucky events that allowed him to survive.

The first was that an ambulance was driving by and stopped.

The second was that the paramedic quickly diagnosed that Ken had a ruptured aorta and was bleeding internally. The third was that they were not far from a hospital and the fourth was that the heart surgeons were ready and wai ng in theatre to do open heart surgery on another pa ent.

The ambulance radioed ahead, the other chap’s op was postponed, Ken was rushed into theatre and the surgeons dived into his chest.

It was all astonishing good luck. He told me that his surgeon had said only two out of a hundred people with ruptured aortas survive.

Ken was humbled by this and decided to live a healthier life and get fit.

I was gob smacked when two years later this couch potato and his plas c aorta finished the Two Oceans ultra marathon.

He sent a photograph of himself crossing the finishing line to the heart surgeon, thanking him for saving his life.

The surgeon was really chuffed, and said normally he never heard from the people he had operated on ever again.

So ja, there are many interes ng tales about the Two Oceans Marathon.

Emil Zátopek, the only person to have won the 5000m, the 10,000m, and the marathon in the same Olympic Games, once said: “If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon.”
