Forecasts Then and Now

Sho! What hecc weather we’ve had in the Cape: gale force winds that ripped off roofs, overturned trucks, brought down power lines and uprooted trees.

At least the weather services gave us plenty of warning –unlike weather forecasts in the bad old days.

I remember when I was one of several journalists invited on a 3day pony trek by the Lesotho tourism department. The weather services had forecast good weather and we set off in sunshine. What a brilliant way to travel, sing high on a pony, surveying the spectacular mountain scenery without having to watch one’s feet.

As I said, weather forecasts were not so good back then.

That aernoon the sky suddenly darkened, the wind came up, lightning flashed and thunder boomed.

The guide called a stop: we needed to make camp early - but the wind had other ideas. Tents were whipped out of our hands, guy ropes became a bird’s nest - and then the rain started.

Up on the hillside a group of Basothos watched these useless city slickers.

Rain turned to hail and our guide ran up to the village and begged for shelter

And you know, they gave it to us without hesitaon. People moved out of two huts and we moved in, changed out of our wet clothes, laid out sleeping bags and sighed with relief.

Later there was a knock at the door and a woman stood holding a three-legged pot of hot water, while someone else appeared with a spade of hot coals. It was for us to cook with. I was so touched. They made the cooking space just under the thatch overhang out of the rain.

I tossed in some rice and got another pot from our stores to heat several ns of bully beef. Everyone ate every scrap.

It was dark by then, so I stacked the plates outside to deal with in the morning.

Next morning another knock on the door: a woman had brought boiling water for coffee.

And to my astonishment, I saw all the plates had been washed and neatly stacked under the overhang. I felt a bit ashamed, but very grateful. Even the bully beef ns had been washed.

Before leaving, we did a whip around to make a donaon, and one of the journalists made a speech of thanks, translated by our guide.

I was packing the plates when a woman spoke to me in Sotho. I called the guide to translate.

You know what she had asked? If she could keep the bully beef ns if I didn’t want them.

I was humbled. People so poor that those ns were of value.

I wondered if the tables had been turned, and a group of rural Basothos were in trouble, how many of us would have opened up our homes to them as graciously as they had to us.

So ja, the weather forecasts back then were not so good, but with hindsight I am glad they weren’t in that instance.

If not for that wild storm, we wouldn’t have experienced the grace of those people who I will never see again, but will always remember
