Think Global Act Local

There is a brilliant website called Our World in Data which I really recommend.

It says the world faces many problems like poverty, disease, hunger, climate change, war and inequality – but we are not making as much progress as we could in tackling these issues.

At the same me there are many thousands of researchers around the world who have studied these topics and have excellent data as a result.

Our World in Data believes that a key reason our progress is not as good as it could be is because we do not use this research data to help us.

No surprise really, as “the important knowledge is oen stored in inaccessible databases, locked behind paywalls or buried under jargon in academic papers,” it says.

The website makes an important point: we cannot rely on the world’s media to keep ourselves properly informed.

First, the media focus on the bad news, and second, they focus on single events, like an earthquake, a war, flood, famine. Taken together this means you don’t get a picture of the world as it really is.

Relying on the media can also mean people get stuck in the “despondency trap”, not realising that posive change is possible.

“Much of our work has been dedicated to countering this threat,” they say

For instance you read stascs like these:

• every year 300,000 women die from pregnancy-related causes

• the world chopped down 47 million hectares of forest in the last 10 years – the size of Sweden

• 13% of the world’s adults are illiterate

• 10% of the world lives in extreme poverty on less that R47 a day.

• 5 million children die before they are five – 10 dead children every minute.

But what we are not told in the media is that there has been progress in each of these spheres:

• the number of women who die from pregnancy-related causes has come down from 450,000 women in 2000 to 300,000 today

• global deforestaon has declined from 151 million hectares in the 1980s to 47 million hectares in 2010.

• the percentage of the world’s adults who can read and write has increased from 56% in 1980 to 87% today.

• the number of people living on R47 a day fell from 38% in 1990 to 10%.

• the number of children who die before they are five fell from 12 million in 1990 to 5 million.

These figures tell us is we are making progress, but we could be doing beer, says Our World in Data

“To make the world a beer place, the first step is to understand the problems we face today.”

Imagine if we all did that, each in our own spheres. Not tackle the world, but Think Global: Act Local.

We could teach an adult to read and write. Donate to an early childhood development scheme. Cut down aliens and plant indigenous. Offer a few hours of our medical training to an understaffed clinic. Beach cleanups. Cut our carbon footprints. No government can solve these issues alone, but each of us can help make the world a ny bit beer in our own small corners.
