Just Nuisance Next week will be the anniversary of a very special dog, the only dog ever to be officially enlisted into the Royal Navy: Able Seaman Just Nuisance born in Rondebosch on 1st April 1937.

This Great Dane is s ll famous and to mark his 87th anniversary there will be a Just Nuisance Fes val in Simon’s Town with a parade that anyone - and his dog – can join.

This massive Great Dane was bought in 1938 by Benjamin Chaney, who ran the United Service’s Ins tute in Simon’s Town that catered for the welfare of servicemen.

The dog came to work with him and soon the 1m high pooch and the Royal Navy sailors became best mates.

He loved to lie in the sun on a ship’s gangplank, to the annoyance of the busy naval chaps who told him, fondly, he was a “bloody nuisance!”

Nuisance became his name.

Nuisance loved accompanying the sailors on the train to Cape Town, but the South African Railways conductors said the dog did not have a cket, so would put him off at the next sta on.

Eventually the railways said the next me the dog was found on the train, he would be taken off and shot.

Everyone in the Royal Navy world was horrified. They loved him.

Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Sir George Lyon, found a solu on: make the dog a member of the Royal Navy and he would then have a free train pass.

As Terrance Sisson writes in his book Just Nuisance, “although it set a precedent unequalled in naval history, the dog Nuisance was to be officially enlisted as a member of His Majesty’s Royal Navy”.

When a lieutenant was filling in Nuisance’s official naval cer ficate, he wrote “Nuisance” as his surname, but was stumped about what to put as a first name. He told a colleague he would “leave it blank and give the name as just Nuisance”.

“That’s it sir, his Chris an name, write ‘Just’ in that column.”

That’s how Nuisance became Just Nuisance.

Just Nuisance began his naval service on 25th August 1939, just weeks before Britain declared war on Germany.

He had his own bunk, was fed grandly, and learned from the sailors to enjoy a quart of lager.

At parades he stood to a en on with his cap on while the na onal anthem was played.

He o en visited Wingfield Aerodrome and the crew used to sneak him on to Albacore aircra . He loved being airborne.

He lived a full life, but jumping from moving trucks and other an cs had taken its toll and he was becoming paralysed in his back legs. At the age of seven he had to be put down.

Just Nuisance was buried with full military honours, and some ba le-hardened veterans wept when the Last Post was played.

When Just Nuisance author Sisson was sent to the UK in 1944, he was heart-broken to be leaving the Great Dane.

The medical officer said he knew how it felt to lose those we loved.
