Want to be Happy? Here’s How Think back to yesterday. Can you remember five things that made you worried, depressed, envious or irritated?

Chances are you could name them quite quickly.

Now name five things from yesterday that made you feel grateful.

Take a bit longer?

Humans tend to take the good things in life for granted, while we dwell on the bad things. And that’s a pity, because it has been shown that gra tude makes one happier.

That sounds trite, but recently I have been reading about gra tude wri en by people from different disciplines – psychologists, monks, psychiatrists – and they all say people who prac se being grateful become happier.

Gra tude is broadly defined as the apprecia on of what is valuable and meaningful to oneself.

Here’s an example. Two US psychologists took three groups of people and told one group to write daily about things for which they were grateful, the second to write about daily irrita ons, and the third to write about anything that had affected them, good or bad.

They did this for 10 weeks. Guess what? The group who wrote about gra tude was “more op mis c and felt be er about their lives”, according to the ar cle in Harvard Medical School News.

The researchers said gra tude helped people refocus on what they had instead of what they lacked, and although it might feel contrived at first, this mental state grew stronger with prac ce.

Buddhist monk Haemin Sunim wrote that people were usually unhappy because they could not find peace with “what is”.

“We are always mentally grasping for something we don’t have, so the mind stays in a perpetual state of dissa sfac on.”

He said the best way to change this was to prac se being grateful.

“When we are thankful, we usually don’t think about what we don’t have or could have.”

Sunim suggests placing a pebble somewhere visible in your home, and every me you pass it, think of one thing to be grateful for at that moment.

I love that idea.

Then there is the author AJ Jacobs, who said in an interview with Psychology Today that he wanted to boost feeling happy, so embarked on a “gra tude journey”.

“He selected one item that was important to him – his morning cup of coffee – and decided to thank 1,000 people who had contributed to it.”

Jacobs wrote a book, Thanks a Thousand: A Gra tude Journey, describing his travels to thank people, including steelworkers, water purifica on staff, transport people and coffee farmers in Columbia.

The first person he thanked was the woman from whom he bought his morning cuppa. She said most people treated her like a vending machine.

“They thrust out the credit card without looking up from their phones,” she said.

How rude. Jacobs admi ed he had also done that, so made a pledge “to look every person in the eye to remind myself they’re human”.

Odd to have to remind oneself.

Want to try prac sing gra tude? Start off every morning naming three things for which you are grateful.

Who knows, with me you too may feel like GK Chesterton who said: “I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gra tude is happiness doubled by wonder."
