Free Play Makes Kids Mentally Fit When you were a child did you play freely with friends and siblings, making up your own games, without grownups around?

Or did your parents structure your play me with a lot of adult supervision?

If you were lucky enough to have had free play me, psychologists say the chances are you are all the be er for it.

If you had very structured play, chances are your parents did you a disservice.

I read this in the Harvard Gaze e where psychologist Peter Gray from Boston College in the US said that encouraging children to play independently “fosters resilient, self-reliant and mentally fit young people”.

Since the 1980s children in the US have had very structured rou nes with adult supervision.

This happens here too, certainly with many middle-income families.

“Helicopter parents” always hovering over their kids.

Interes ngly, with the increase in structured play me in the US, Gray says there has also been an increase in children who suffer from anxiety or mental health problems.

It’s no surprise, he says, because there is a link between children’s freedom to play and mental health.

It has to do with something psychologists call the “locus of control”, which means the degree to which you believe you are, or are not, in control of your life.

Some people have an “internal locus of control” which means they believe they have control over what happens to them, that it is the result of their own abili es or ac ons – or even their mistakes.

People with an “external locus of control” believe they have li le control over their lives, and what happens to them is the result of “outside” things - fate, other people, circumstances – and they blame these for what happens to them.

No one is en rely one or the other, but people usually have a dominant internal or external locus of control.

It is not surprising that those who have a dominant internal locus of control are more confident when faced with problems, more selfsufficient, independent - and happier.

But those who have an external locus of control don’t believe they can change things through their own efforts, feel helpless when faced with problems, think their successes are just because of luck, and blame others for what happens to them.

Back to children and play.

Gray says free play is an essen al part of a child’s learning.

Through play children learn how to solve problems, to make friends, to deal with someone who’s not nice to them, or if they get hurt, what to do about it – in short, to take charge of their lives.

And here’s the important thing: free play develops a child’s internal locus of control, their sense of being in control of their lives.

“Psychologists have long known that if you do not have a strong internal locus of control, that sets you up for anxiety and depression,” Gray said.

A survey conducted in the US found that as children had less free play, mental disorders increased.

Psychiatrist Susan Linn says: “Play is the founda on of learning, crea vity, self-expression and construc ve problem-solving. It’s how children wrestle with life to make it meaningful.”

The epoxy coating process is an economical and efficient alternative to traditional pipe system replacement. Our technology restores aged, corroded piping systems and copper pipes that have pinhole leaks. Once the epoxy coating is applied to the interior of the pipe, it will seal and protect the system from further deterioration, dramatically extending the systems life.

Non-Pressurised pipe systems are usually Mains, Horizontal Laterals, Vertical Stacks, Sanitary Systems, Storm / Roof Drains, Vent Systems, Processed / Industrial / Chemical Piping, and other Waste Systems. These systems require a different approach to achieve the desired result.

We deploy a pull-in system that efficiently draws the new liner into the system. Once in place it is expanded and the liner restores the pipe infrastructure to better than new with a 10-year warranty.

After relining your pipes you will have a brand new pipe within your original, deteriorated host pipe.
