Maps versus the Lady on the Dashboard

Someone told me recently that most young people cannot read maps because they are so used to digital direcons on their phones and sat navs to find their way around.

I didn’t think this could be true, but to my surprise I found a bunch of online arcles about just that.

There was a study by the UK’s Ordnance Survey in 2019 that found that many people in the 23 to 38 age group could not read ordinary maps.

Apparently 53% said they would struggle to find their way without their mobile phones, while 15% said they had never read a paper map in their lives.

I love maps. Sat navs are parcularly helpful in foreign countries for negoang through cies, but for a road trip, I want a real map showing the big picture.

I made the mistake of going on a trip in the US without a map some years ago, a spur-of-the-moment skiing trip to New Hampshire with another student on the fellowship programme. I wanted to buy a map but the other students said not to bother because all hire cars had sat navs.

We set off from Cambridge Massachuses with just this voice on the dashboard telling us where to go. It was a first for me. It worked well in geng us out of the city and onto the highway, but when we turned off onto smaller roads, we hit some problems.

We were heading for Woodstock in the White Mountains. The sat nav lady kept telling me to turn right, turn le unl we found ourselves going up a mountain road that became a gravel track.

I didn’t like the look of it.

When we got to a level bit, she told us to turn le down a faint, very steep, track.

“There is no way I am going down there,” I said.

“Why not?” asked my passenger.

“Well, would you drive down that ny mountain track, not knowing where it would end, with snow all around?”

“No,” she replied.

“You see!” I said.

“But that’s because I can’t drive.”

Oh my

I turned the car around and then saw a 4x4 parked behind some trees. I went over. A woman with her dogs.

“Excuse me, I want to get to Woodstock and my sat nav is telling me to go down that track. Is that correct?”

She shook her head.

“Go down that track and you’re heading for trouble.”

She gave me perfect direcons and I sighed with relief I told her it was my first me using a sat nav.

“Yeah, you goa be careful. It may tell you the shortest route, but it may also be the impossible route.”

The first thing I did when I got back was to buy a United States road atlas. I drove several thousand miles that year, and the map book never let me down. But I did use the sat nav to get through the cies. I would say to anyone who can’t read a map, do learn. With that and digital, you’ll have the best of both worlds.

And planning one’s own route is far more fun.

Although Andy and I only knew Marqui for a short while, in the greater Knysna scheme of things’, Marqui became a huge part of our lives. And we are so grateful for that

We have lovely, fond memories of Marqui, many was the time we sat chatting on our balcony, sharing stories, Marqui telling her jokes, which she was famous for.

Every day, when I took Marqui to town and brought her home, I got a history lesson of Knysna - houses, places and streets, the family tree’s of Knysna’s ‘historical’ families she knew well. Marqui had lived in Knysna for 40+ years, and had been involved with the cycling, marathon running scene and theYacht Club. Any time the three of us went out for a meal, Marqui invariable knew several people there. Marqui knew everyone and we loved her for it.

We are so blessed that Marqui got to meet our sons, Oliver and Harry, they instantly loved her and she them. Oliver, Harry, Andy and I are honoured to have known and love Marqui.

Marqui, rest in peace amongst the stars – you are sorely missed.
