Black Soldier Flies to the Rescue

I was relaxing at Noetzie on Sunday when a friend called out to me: “I’ve got black soldier flies! Come and see!”

We walked over to Wendy’s big rubbish bin labeled “Noetzie Kitchen Waste” (neighbours used it too) where she lied the lid and with a big smile said: “Look!”

The mound of old vegetable and fruit peels was crawling with maggots – black soldier fly larvae.

Wendy said the black soldier fly larvae, Hermea illucens, were excellent goggas because they turned organic waste into compost.

She dipped in her hand and lied out some of the larvae. They wriggled around on her palm, grown fat on the pickings in the bin.

“And it doesn’t smell, at all. Aer all this me it should snk.”

She had been dumping all her fruit and veggie peels, tea bags, coffee grounds and other kitchen waste into the bin since before Christmas.

“It was quite full, but since the black soldier flies arrived the larvae have eaten through stacks of it. And look at this lovely compost they leave behind.”

It’s not only Wendy that is excited about black soldier flies, but many people across the world.

The fly, originally from South America, has been hailed as the “king of insect farming”

I had heard of earthworm farms, but had never heard of insect farming.

Apparently it is on the rise in agriculture and food technology because insects provide a sustainable source of protein, yet need only a small amount of land and resources.

Farming the black soldier fly is gaining momentum because of its “unique composng abilies and high protein content”.

“They don’t interfere with humans and they don’t carry disease, not like ordinary houseflies. And people are turning the larvae into animal feed and are even looking at using it for human food,” Wendy said.

A female lays between 200 and 600 eggs near decaying vegetable maer or manure. When the larvae hatch they are 1mm long, but munch their way to 25mm by the end of their larval stage. They then form pupas that hatch into flies and the cycle begins again.

What’s good about the soldier flies is that they are not aracted to households, unlike houseflies and those “blueboles” or blowflies, nor do they regurgitate food like houseflies so don’t spread disease.

The soldier flies are known for their voracious appetes and can reduce the volume of waste by 50%.

The dried larvae are being used for animal feed, while the larvae’s poo, called frass, is an excellent ferlizer. And they can extract certain heavy metals from biomass.

A study done in 2020 compared black soldier fly frass with commercial ferlizers, both organic and inorganic. These were applied to maize plants, and while all increased maize yields, the frass performed beer than both commercial ferlizers.

Isn’t that wonderful!

The authors said black soldier fly frass was also beer for the natural environment than commercial ferlizers that oen damaged the soil and contaminated streams and rivers.

Go online and find where you can get larvae for you own use. You will be doing a great thing for the health of the planet.
