You Are As Healthy As Your Gut Everyone knows about heart and kidney transplants, but who has heard of a poo transplant?

I came across this in a fascina ng BBC podcast about the gut microbiome – the collec on of microscopic goggas that live in our intes nes that are essen al for good health.

Dr James Kinross, a researcher at the Imperial College of London, emphasized how important it is for our health to have a diverse collec on of microbes in our gut.

He told the story of Ray, who was seriously ill with a superbug.

An bio cs had not worked and he was probably going to die.

The only solu on was to completely “reset” Ray’s gut microbiome by doing a faecal microbio c transplanta on – a poo transplant.

They found a donor, removed all the bad bugs from the poo sample, mixed it with a saline solu on and fed it into his stomach by tube.

Within a few days he le hospital, absolutely well.

How astonishing is that!

The superbug could not survive with all the new microbes as compe on.

“But it also changed the way the gut works and we think that is how it was able to kill the superbug.”

So how does one get that healthy diversity of bugs?

It has a lot to do with how your gut microbiome is set up as a baby and child.

During birth we pick up microbes in the mother’s vagina, then get more from her breast milk and later from what we eat. So our early years are crucial.

There are 100 trillion microbes in our colons – bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts and others - which together weigh roughly the same as your brain.

Interes ngly, individuals share only about 10 percent of the same microbes, which Kinross says is probably fundamental to why so many of us experience disease so differently.

The gut microbiome digests fibre, which produces short-chain fa y acids, which may prevent obesity, diabetes, heart disease and lowers the risk of cancer.

The microbiome also helps control how your immune system works by communica ng with the immune cells, so it can control how your body responds to infec on.

But our gut goggas are having a hard me, par cularly in westernized socie es with so much highly processed food.

“Don’t eat powder out of a packet and think you gut is healthy.

Avoid anything ultra processed and pre-packaged. Your microbiome really does not like that,” Kinross said.

“If you put seven more grams of fibre in your diet per day, your risk of stroke will fall.”

Good sources of fibre are fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts and legumes.

The other big thing that is bad for our gut microbes is an bio cs.

They are essen al in some cases, but are some mes prescribed when not necessary.

And we should cut down on the over-the-counter pharmaceu cals, like antacid tablets.

“Minimise unnecessary medica ons in your life and your microbiome will be infinitely happier.”

His other advice is to get vaccinated. You will be far less likely to need an bio cs.

Next me you bite into a cheeseburger or drink a powdered “health” drink, spare a thought for your hungry gut bacteria that will get nothing from that meal.
