Moon Walkers and the Grand Canyon I read this week that more people have walked on the moon than have walked the Grand Canyon.

Found out it’s not true, but close: 12 people have walked on the moon and 12 people have completed the Grand Canyon “through-hike” - doing the en re length in one go.

Only 12. That shows how tough it is. Compare that with the over 4,000 people who have summited Mt Everest.

It’s an incredible place, the Grand Canyon, a gigan c donga scoured out by water over six million years. The rocks are beau ful, stark and mul -coloured, and man, it is deep. You could fit two Table Mountains on top of each other inside it.

It’s 446km long - same distance as Knysna to Somerset West but because of the terrain hikers end up doing double that.

Kenton Grua did the first through-hike in 39 days. Others have taken over 70 days.

It is rugged. There are no trails for 80% of the length on the south side and for 90% on the north side.

Photographs of through-hikers show them free-climbing high, almost ver cal rock faces in places.

What surprised me was the lack of water. I suppose you have to hike away from the river for days on end to tackle the complex routes.

Through-hikers have to leave caches of supplies at specific points before star ng.

Rich Rudow, one of the 12 through-hikers, wrote: “People really don’t understand how difficult it is to travel for a few months without the benefit of a trail. You’re at the mercy of the weather, the difficult terrain, the lack of water and of course, your health. Few people have canyon experience and the judgement it brings to constantly amend your plan because the canyon has other ideas of how and when you should travel through this three-dimensional maze.”

I visited the Grand Canyon while on a fellowship in the US when we did a road trip in our mid-winter break.

We were determined to go down at least a bit of the Bright Angel Trail, a very popular trail that you can walk down or ride on mules.

It had snowed overnight and the trail was frozen. It was scary nego a ng patches of slippery ice with a 2100m drop on the side. I was doing quite well, considering I don’t have a head for heights, when I saw a bunch of mules heading up the trail with big saddle bags s cking out each side.

“Oh no! They’ll push me off!”

I squashed my back against the wall of the canyon as the first mule came past, its big bags just inches from me. Man, I was scared. And there were five more!

When the muleteer told me others would be coming up later, I decided to turn back.

The through-hikers take two months. I did two hours.

American geologist John Wesley Powell wrote that you cannot see the Grand Canyon in one view: “To see it you have to toil from month to month through its labyrinths.”

I am sure he is right.

I’ll never be the number 13 through-hiker, that’s for sure, but s ll, my li le two-hour icy hike was wonderful.
