Sand Vibrations

I came across something fascinang today: a video that showed how music makes paerns in sand.

Not only that, but how different frequencies from musical instruments can make water from a tap suddenly coil, flames dance and “lightning” crack to the beat of the music.

I was gripped, and watched one video clip aer another, a big smile on my dial as even more fantasc paerns were created by different sound frequencies.

This is to do with “cymacs”, the study of the effects of sound waves on maer

It involves “creang visible paerns on the surface of a medium, such as sand or water, by using sound vibraons at different frequencies”.

These extraordinary videos were made by New Zealand musician Nigel Stanford. Check them online.

He aached a metal plate to a speaker and sprinkled sand onto the metal. As he played different notes on the keyboard, the sand instantly rearranged itself into different geometric paerns. It was like a “sound kaleidoscope”: instead of different paerns every me you twist the kaleidoscope, you got different geometric paerns in the sand with each different note.

I came across these videos when reading about fossilised elephant footprints that have been found along our coastline at De Hoop Nature Reserve.

Fossil footprints sounds like a different subject altogether, which it is, but here’s the connecon: researchers believe they have found the very first fossil sound waves made by the low frequency “rumbles” that prehistoric elephants made thousands of years ago. These sound waves were captured in what was then sand.

I have chaed before about elephants’ low frequency communicaon – deep rumbles too low for humans to hear

These sounds travel from their vocal chords down their legs into the ground and then over fairly long distances in seismic waves. Other elephants pick up these through their feet.

Some researchers say elephants can communicate in this way up to 2km away, others say as much as 6km.

Charles Helm from Nelson Mandela University has found more than 350 fossil tracks of vertebrates along the southern Cape Coast, mostly in what was once sand that has become cemented into stone. These range in age from 35,000 years to 400,000 years old. Quite something.

Recently he found fossil elephant footprints at De Hoop, and something mysterious nearby the footprints: a group of concentric rings. Helm believes these rings are fossilised sound waves made by prehistoric elephants.

The low frequency sound waves would have travelled down a prehistoric elephant’s legs just as they do today, and created the concentric rings in the sand thousands of years ago – similar to how different frequencies create paerns in the sand in the music videos. Over me these rings became fossilised.

If he is correct, Helm has found what he describes as “the world’s first trace of underground communicaon between elephants in a fossil form”.

That is astonishing.

People have probably walked past these marks many mes, not giving them a second glance. Now we can look at them with more understanding, and stand in awe.
