Tripping the Light Fantastic

We had the most brilliant experience on Saturday night - dancing on stars at Nature’s disco!

We were staying with my sister Julie when one of our friends on the beach at Noetzie sent a pic of a wave breaking with a shimmering blue light.

Julie jumped up and said: “Come, let’s go and watch! I knew this would happen because we had a red de today”

We all jumped into the Landie, shot off to the beach and walked onto the cool sand.

What a sight!

It was a dark night and the Milky Way was brilliant with millions of stars, and every me a wave broke there was a flash of cobalt blue that shot along the wave’s crest like blue lightning. It was truly splendid.

We have seen this phenomenon over the years at Noetzie, and had always called it “phosphorescence”, but that’s not the right word. Phosphorescence is something different. The blue shine we see in the waves is called “bioluminescence” – light created by living organisms, in this case microscopic plankton.

We walked in the dark towards the sea, watching the brilliant blue waves break. Then as we reached the wet sand, the ground around our feet suddenly lit up with a thousand blue sparkles. Each footstep we took brought a ring of ny blue lights shimmering around our feet - bioluminescent plankton in the wet sand.

It was such fun! I ran and skipped and danced on the sand, watching these lile stars of brilliant blue erupng around each footstep. We had stars above us, stars at our feet - and blue lightning in the breakers. It was wonderful.

All this was the result of the red de we had seen at Noetzie that day

The red de was apparently prey extensive, stretching from Lambert’s Bay on the West Coast to Pleenberg Bay.

Many of you will have seen it, an orange smudge on the surface of the sea, almost a coral colour, thick in places. It looked beauful against the deep blue ocean.

Red des, also called algal blooms, are caused by a “populaon explosion” of microscopic plankton. This occurs when sea temperatures are just right, the sea is calm and there is an abundance of nutrients.

Plankton contain pigments – green, red, orange, brown or even purple – so the colour of red des varies according to which species has mulplied en masse.

It is these same microscopic organisms that create the blue, or somemes green, light in the sea at night.

One of them is Nocluca scinllans, a dinoflagellate. Its name comes from the Lan Nocluca, meaning “light at night”, and scinllans, meaning “shining”. Very apt name.

Apparently bioluminescent plankton do not glow all the me because it takes energy to make the chemicals that create light.

So when do they glow? Some sciensts think that they light up to scare away predators. They also think the light may aract bigger predators that then eat those that were preying on the plankton. They don’t really know

Whatever the reason, aren’t we lucky to be able to witness the splendour of one of Nature’s dazzling secrets?
