I served on the SAS Mosselbaai which was one of three minesweepers which visited Knysna between January and July of that year. On the night before we sailed a friend and I went to a coffee bar where we got into conversation with two girls. As I recall we walked them home before returning to the ship. The next morning, literally as we were casting off to return to Simonstown I was called on the intercom and to my surprise discovered that one of the girls had come to say goodbye to me. Having spent no more than an hour or two in her company I was very touched by this gesture and have never forgotten it. I have recently moved to Knysna and made more than one visit to the Quays. These visits proved to be very nostalgic, prompting this “long shot” which is addressed to the lady I met that evening and very brieﬂy chatted to the next day. As a long shot it involves a lot of “ifs”. If you still live in Knysna, or just happen to be in the vicinity at some stage and if you would like to have a second cup of coffee (or it may have been a milkshake) I would be very happy to buy you one. Walking Backwards Happy New Year and welcome back to Stoep Chat! Any of you made New Year’s resolu ons? Was one of them to get fit and lose weight? If so, you are in good company: these are two of the most common New Year resolu ons world wide – well, certainly among the world’s well-fed millions. I have a resolu on too: to walk backwards more o en. I know that sounds odd, but it is part of my “get fit” resolu on. Here’s why: walking backwards is s mula ng for the brain because it has to work harder to process the extra demands of coordina ng all the muscles and joints for this more unusual form of movement. I guess like learning new dance steps – and we know that learning a new dance is good for the brain because it helps develop new neural connec ons. Walking backwards also improves one’s balance and stability. I need that, especially when ge ng knocked about in these powerful Noetzie waves. These benefits are enough to convince me to prac se walking backwards – but there are more that may help people with certain ailments. Knee osteoarthri s for instance, when the car lage has worn down so your bones rub together, causing pain. Walking backwards helps to reduce the pain and increase mobility of the knee. It also helps those with lower back pain because when you walk backwards you use more of the muscles that support your lower back. These are not just thumb-sucks, but are the result of academic studies. Researchers even have a new name for it: retro walking. Love that. We all know that normal walking is one of the best ways of maintaining a “healthy weight”, but handle this – when you walk backwards you use almost 40% more energy. One study shows that women who did a six-week backwards walk or run training programme showed “reduc ons in body fat”. It’s best to start in an open, flat space that you have checked out to see there are no hazards in your backward path. And you must resist the urge to twist your body to look behind you. Keep your head and chest upright. I tried it out on Noetzie beach, expec ng people to think I was a bit weird. So I said to one local I knew: “I’m off to walk backwards now”, thinking she would look at me askance, but she replied: “Oh yes, I walk backwards up steps too.” Next I tried walking up the steep road you have to take to get up from the beach. I met and cha ed to a group of friends en route and then said I was off to walk backwards. “Yes,” said Franco, “tell her, I’m always telling her she must do it” he said, poin ng at his wife. Well, well. What I thought was a new get-fit technique is old hat to some people. German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said: “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” I wonder what kind of thoughts are generated by walking backwards. Most likely something rather basic like: “I hope I’m not going to bash into a pole or tread in dog poo.” Have a good 2024!
