A Christmas Message of Peace Recent news reports about Bethlehem made me remember the me I visited that town on Israel’s West Bank many years ago while backpacking overseas.

It was a big disappointment.

A er working on a kibbutz for a while, two fellow kibbutz volunteers and I decided to travel around Israel.

Our des na on was the Red Sea to explore the amazing coral reefs. We loved Jerusalem, a fascina ng city, and then went to Bethlehem.

It was a dirty li le town.

Of course we wanted to see the birthplace of Christ, and to this day I am not sure where we went, but it did not look like the photographs of the Church of the Na vity I have seen since.

We were directed down a road to join a queue of people. We paid our entrance fee and went down steps to a small, dimly lit room.

There was a small cave behind glass and in the middle of it was a plas c doll lying in a crib.

I don’t know what I was expec ng, but not that.

We shouldered our backpacks and headed for the Red Sea. The pictures I see now of where Jesus was supposed to have been born has a marble floor with a big silver star set into the marble to mark the spot of the manger.

Like many of the great world religions, Chris anity has places that draw its followers to make pilgrimages. Bethlehem is one of them and at this me of year it is usually filled with tourists and pilgrims alike. But this December it is almost deserted, a result of the Israeli/Pales nian war.

One shop owner, who sells wooden na vity carvings, said the last me he’d had a customer was on October 6th.

“We pray for peace,” he said on TV. “Bethlehem is the city where peace was born so it should be the messenger for peace to spread all over the world.”

Last week churches in Bethlehem cancelled Christmas celebra ons as an expression of unity with the people of Gaza.

There is a Lutheran Church in the town that has a very unusual Christmas na vity scene. Normally na vity scenes depict a stable with baby Jesus nestled in a manger, Mary and Joseph looking on and the three wise men and shepherds kneeling beside it.

This year the priest decided to make a very different na vity scene.

There is a baby Jesus, but instead of being nestled in a manager surrounded by people, he is lying in a pile of concrete rubble, all alone.

The Reverend Munther Isaac said: “The idea is to send a message to the world that this is what Christmas looks like in Pales ne – children being pulled from under the rubble.”

I looked at the photograph. It was stark and chilling.

Pope Francis said that this Christmas we should not forget those suffering from war in Ukraine, Pales ne, Israel and other war-torn areas.

Will there always be wars? Or will there come a day when people learn to live in peace?

It would be wonderful if the Pope’s message this week becomes a reality: “May the approach of Christmas strengthen the commitment to open paths of peace.”
