Keep People and Sharks Safe Men on sharks and many people react with fear – yet the odds of being killed by a shark are 1 in 3.7 million.

The odds of being killed in a car accident are 1 in 134 – but we jump into our cars without a care.

Every year humans kill between 75 and 100 million sharks.

Most are for shark fin soup, a status symbol food in some countries.

A cruel status symbol. The sharks’ fins are cut off while they’re s ll alive and their bodies thrown overboard where they die a slow death.

Shark numbers are dwindling globally. In KZN we kill them with shark nets in which they become entangled and drown. So do dolphins, seals, turtles and fish.

So I was delighted to learn University of Stellenbosch researchers had patented a technology – SharkSafe Barriers - that repels sharks but doesn’t harm them.

These were recently installed in the Bahamas, the first commercial installa on.

The technology is simple, but rather clever.

Sharks are sensi ve to strong magne c fields. They have li le gel-filled pores on their heads, connected directly to their brains, designed to pick up electrical currents in the water from other marine life, par cularly prey.

However, if there is a strong electro-magne c field in the water their sensors become over-loaded and they leave.

SharkSafe Barrier researchers used this knowledge to create their barriers. They put magnets into long pipes anchored to blocks on the ocean bed. The pipes stand upright and sway in the currents rather like a kelp forest.

When sharks approach, the strong magne c field over s mulates their receptors and they move away.

Hey presto! A simple, safe, non-lethal shark repellent technology.

I was curious to find out if any had been installed in South Africa.

Dr Sara Andreo , co-founder of the SharkSafe Barrier, said none had.

“Shark nets have been in KZN since 1950 and it is really hard to change the way things are done. That’s why it’s so exci ng that the Bahamas have installed it. We’re hoping it will catch on and come back for use here,” she said.

The barriers are more expensive to install than shark nets, but the long-term maintenance is far less.

“It’s very cheap to run. I’ve been speaking to interna onal banks to try to get bridging finance for municipali es to have them installed.”

She is in discussions with Bitou Municipality about installing SharkSafe Barriers at Ple enberg Bay. A 250m setup would cost R15 million.

“But you don’t need divers to check the equipment, you can check all the pipes s cking out with binoculars from the shore.

“We would train exis ng groups like NSRI or Shark Spo ers to clean and monitor them,” Dr Andreo said.

White shark numbers are dropping in South Africa. Gene c tests show that the number of breeding sharks is way below what was needed for a healthy popula on.

“The gene c diversity is bad, so any change in their environment will cause what we see now, a drop in numbers.”

Perhaps Ple will be the leader South Africa needs and install these environmentally friendly alterna ves to keep swimmers safe.

And let’s hope KZN will follow.
