Blue for Boys but Pink for Buoys You all know those pink rescue buoys at beaches.

I used to work with the man behind them: Andrew Ingram.

Lovely guy and excellent photographer, who for decades gave South Africans the news in pictures.

When he le journalism to join the Na onal Sea Rescue Ins tute (NSRI), Andrew gave South Africans something else: pink buoys.

They are his brainchild.

NSRI launched pink buoys in 2017 and since then they have saved the lives of 158 people.

“Those are the ones we know of. There must be heaps more that we don’t hear of.”

Andrew had always been disturbed by the number of people who drown in South Africa, par cularly those who drown while trying to save others.

The spark that made him take ac on was a photograph in a local Mossel Bay newspaper about a 41-year-old man who had drowned at Glentana beach trying to rescue his daughter. The girl survived but her father drowned.

“There was a photo of his wife and two daughters si ng on a couch holding a picture of him. It broke my heart. I knew if he had had any type of flota on device he would not have drowned.”

Soon a erwards he was sent to a conference in Vancouver where just such a flota on device was on display. It was used on Hawaiian beaches.

“These were rescue tubes a ached to poles for use by the public.

I thought it was such a clever idea, but we couldn’t afford them.

So I was thinking, what else can we use?”

Andrew tried all sorts of things: empty coke bo les on a rope, pool noodles with a piece of wood a ached so they could be thrown like javelins.

“Then I realised the obvious answer was to use what lifeguards use the torpedo buoy. We could design our own and make our own mold.”

Rescue buoys are usually yellow or red which is clearly visible in the ocean. Why did Andrew choose pink?

“I was watching trail runners on the mountain wearing lumo clothing. The lumo pink stood out way more than the others, so I decided on pink buoys.

“They have been an enormous success. It was sheer fluke really that we chose pink, but it somehow really captured the imagina on of the public.”

Each buoy costs R1500. This includes the pole and board that carries instruc ons on how to use it, and the NSRI emergency phone number.

The idea is not to go into the water yourself – unless you are a strong swimmer - but to throw the buoy to the person in difficul es.

Of the 1700 pink buoys in South Africa, 95% were sponsored.

Companies o en sponsor a pink buoy and put their logos on them.

The pink buoys programme won an award for innova on and technology from the Interna onal Mari me Rescue Federa on in 2018, and are being adopted by Surf Lifesaving New Zealand.

They will be a different colour.

“I am absolutely thrilled by New Zealands’s buy-in. I think the rest of the world will follow.”

And it all came from Andrew’s empathy for the man who drowned in Glentana trying to save his daughter.
