Pipefish and Seahorses One of my special finds while beachcombing at Noetzie some years ago was a pipefish skeleton.

It was perfect. I have never seen pipefish underwater and was stoked to find the remains of one on the sand.

I hung it in the kitchen on the nail my father had hammered into the wall years before to hold a paraffin lamp.

When we were packing up the house in September for the demoli on and rebuilding, I wondered if I should keep it.

In the end I did, wrapped in many sheets of ssue in a cardboard box.

Pipefish have long, narrow bodies and look rather snake-like but they are true fish. They don’t have bones inside, but have an external skeleton made of bony plates. That is what I found on the beach.

What made me think of my pipefish was an ar cle I read last week about a species of pipefish that lives in only two places in the world: the Kariega and Bushmans estuaries in the Eastern Cape.

This pipefish (Syngnathus watermeyeri) used to live in other Eastern Cape estuaries, but gradually disappeared and in 1994 it was declared ex nct. Happily some of the pipefish were rediscovered some years later in those two estuaries.

It is listed as “cri cally endangered” by the Interna onal Union for the Conserva on of Nature (IUCN) and is South Africa’s rarest fish.

What kills pipefish? Many things including pollu on, destruc on of their sea grass habitat, too much water pumped out upriver, overfishing and more.

Pipefish belong to the same family as seahorses, and we all know about the threatened Knysna seahorses.

This deligh ul li le creature is found in only three places in the world: the Knysna, Keurbooms and Swartvlei estuaries. That’s it.

Seahorses mate for life. They apparently do an amazing courtship dance that can last up to nine hours and involves spinning, swimming side-by-side, changing colours and holding tails.

So sweet.

But like pipefish, these guys are also in trouble.

The Knysna estuary is one of the most heavily used water bodies in South Africa and with that comes problems like pollu on, over-fishing, development and the destruc on of their natural habitat.

The IUCN classes the Knysna seahorse as “endangered” – the only seahorse in the world to have this sad label.

Knysna’s sea grass beds, where seahorses and pipefish live, are also threatened.

There is something you can do to help seahorses: you can join Sanparks’ Ci zen Science programme.

When the Swartvlei estuary is ar ficially breached, the water level drops leaving some seahorses stranded. Sanparks then calls on those registered in the programme to help search for stranded seahorses and return them to deeper water.
