And wasn’t old Siya Kolisi just wonderful in his post-match interview? Chest s ll heaving from exer on, he was asked: “What does this moment mean for you?”

His first words were not about what it meant to him, but to praise the New Zealand team.

“I want to give credit to the All Blacks. They took us to the end, they took us to a dark place. It shows what kind of team they are to fight with a man down from early in the game.”

Winning team captains do o en give credit to the losing team, but it always seems a quick comment made in passing, whereas Kolisi sounded as if he really meant it.

It must be temp ng to come across as “rah, rah, we’re the best” when your team has won a World Cup. Instead Kolisi expressed gra tude and thanked the people of South Africa.

“Honestly, people not from South Africa don’t know what it means for this country. You know, our country goes through such a lot, and we are bearing that hope that they have. We are so grateful to be here and I just want to tell the people of South Africa ‘thank you so much’.”

Remember how Cheslin Kolbe reacted a er he had been yellow-carded late in the game? He sat on the bench with his rugby jersey pulled over his head and stayed like that. It was clear how bad he felt.

Kolisi knew that. Soon a er the final whistle Kolisi broke away from the Springboks’ cheering and jubila on, ran over to Kolbe and hugged him.

What intrigued me about Kolisi’s generosity of spirit is that he grew up with so li le. Born to teenaged parents, his mother le him with his grandmother. They were poor and there were many mes when he drank sugar water because that was all they had.

Then today I read something he said and I realised that he had one constant in his life that helped set him up to be the man he is today: a strong woman who loved him.

He may have gone to bed hungry and had no shoes, but he was always loved.

“I’ve been surrounded by strong women who have played a very important role in my life. That’s actually been the story of my life, being raised by my grandmother, then my aunt looking a er me.

My wife Rachel has also been the pillar of our family.”

Like his grandmother and aunt before her.

“At mes when the public gets to me when they tell me I am a quota or I am just a poli cal captain, I get to a place that people don’t see. I get to a dark place where I start doub ng everything I am and what I stand for, but she’s always that voice that tells me, ‘You are enough. You are good enough.’ Without her, I don’t think I would be where I am today.”
