KNYSNA HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The Society will launch two books at their next meeting at Cearn Hall. The first book covers the history of the Buffalo Bay and Goukamma areas.

This book is unique, being the first book published about this area. The book, in Afrikaans, was written by Professor Ebben van Zyl. The second book is about the lives and times of three colourful Irish Foresters who started their forestry careers in Knysna and left their marks here.

This book was written by Philip Caveney, in English. The talks will be supported by illustrations and maps and both books will be on sale after the event. The talks will be held at Cearn Hall, Leisure Isle, at 17h00 on Thursday 19 October, 2023. Eskom permitting. Members free, guests are most welcome.

Ancient Puff Adders There are some experiences that make me shudder every me I remember them.

It had been a warm spring day at Noetzie about a month ago and my sister Sabrina was outside Julie’s house not long a er sunset.

Wendy came around the corner and called out that she wanted to show her a certain flower. As Sabrina started to walk, Wendy shouted: “There’s a snake!”

We rushed out and there was a fat puff adder lying on the lawn, stretched out in a long line. She could have stepped on it in the dusk.

I have seen many puff adders, but they have almost always been half hidden in bush or rocks.

We watched as it slid off into the agapanthus. I will never walk onto that lawn again without a torch.

What I really wanted to tell you about was a wonderful discovery along the coast near Hermanus where researchers found the first ever fossilised snake track, called a “trace”. And guess what kind of snake it was? A puff adder. They can tell by the straight line it le .

They believe the snake moved across a sand dune between 83,000 to 93,000 years ago, and the mark it le became cemented over me.

Much later the stone eroded and the snake’s path was exposed again.

Not only the puffie le its mark, but so did a long-horned buffalo.

“Intriguingly, a long-horned buffalo - an ex nct species – had walked across the same dune surface soon a er the snake. We know this because one of the buffalo’s tracks is superimposed on the puff adder trace,” wrote researchers Charles Helm and Hayley Cawthra.

This is the first discovery of a fossilised mark le by a snake anywhere in the world.

Different snakes move in different ways. The puffie moves in a “rec linear” mo on, using muscular contrac ons, leaving behind a straight line.

That is exactly how our puff adder moved over the lawn that evening, in a straight line.

I learned something else about puff adders: they have evolved to “hide” their smell.

Unlike many snakes that hunt their prey, puff adders lie in wait for their prey. The have excellent camouflage and can lie absolutely s ll for ages.

One would think that any mouse or frog that came near would smell the snake and rush off in the opposite direc on. But they don’t.

They hop right up to the snake and wham! The puff adder strikes.

It has one of the fastest strikes of any snake in the world – 0.25 of a second.

Scien sts don’t yet know how the puffie hides its smell, but they have video footage of animals walking right passed them. One shows a porcupine almost tripping over a puffie. Clearly it did not smell a thing. Neither did the mouse that got eaten.

Puff adders have existed for millions of years, so have had me to evolve into the perfect ambush hunter – excellent camouflage and no smell.

And how wonderful that the first fossil snake imprint in the world was found in South Africa.

As the researchers wrote: “Our latest find is yet another global first for the Cape south coast.”
