Plastic Munching Bacteria

I love the lile lacy marks that waves leave on the sand at the high de mark.

I did not love what I saw the waves had le at the high de mark on Noetzie beach yesterday: bole tops, bread tags, ear buds, straws, boles and hundreds of plasc fragments. That was just a few hours aer Noetzie’s self-appointed car guard had cleaned the beach.

Every wave brings in more plasc. It is not surprising, I suppose. All the beach rubbish bins were washed away in the September 16 destrucve storm surge, and that rubbish is washing up day aer day. The recent heavy rains have contributed to the rubbish: lier washes into the rivers that flow into the Knysna lagoon, and that washes out through The Heads and some of it ends up on our beaches.

And then there is the plasc that is thrown overboard by thousands of ships and boats at sea.

It feels as if we are drowning in plasc. It is, of course, a very useful material, an essenal part of life in many spheres, and I don’t think we could live without it. But we have a massive problem of what to do with plasc waste.

Plasc stays around forever. It breaks up into smaller pieces, but it never disappears – unlike metal or wood that people have used for thousands of years. Discarded plasc is a big threat to the natural environment. Animals, birds and micro-organisms, especially in the ocean, swallow plasc and many die as a result. Plankton also absorbs micro-plasc, so it goes up the marine food chain.

But there may be a soluon.

Some of you may remember in 2001 when Japanese sciensts made the startling discovery that bacteria were eang plasc at a rubbish dump.

According to the Guardian, when they finally published their work in 2016, “it emerged into a world desperate for soluons to the plasc crisis, and it became a blockbuster hit”.

Although the bacteria lived off the plasc, it took a long me for them to consume it. Sciensts are now trying to speed up the process.

They know that it is the enzymes in the bacteria that “eat” the plasc, so now they are genecally engineering these enzymes to create ones that consume plasc more quickly.

A French company is using an enzyme from bacteria to process 250kg of PET plasc waste every day. PET is the kind of plasc used for water boles.

When the enzyme has done its work, two liquid chemicals are le over, which can be used to make new plasc.

How clever is that!

The Guardian arcle says this company will open a facility in 2025 that will process 130 tons of plasc a day

It’s sll early days, but it is heartening to know that these plasc-eang bacteria may hold the key to cleaning up what has become a scourge on our planet.

So far sciensts have focused on using these bacteria to turn discarded plasc into new plasc.

The prize would be to find bacteria that can turn plasc back into substances that nature can absorb.
