The destruc ve storm surge two weeks ago scoured out so much sand that the beach is much lower than normal and the Noetzie River is almost flowing “downhill”. The water level is so low I can walk to the rocks we used to jump off as kids into deep river water – which kids s ll do today. If they jumped off now, they would land on sand.
I was delighted to find I could now photograph the li le square of concrete on the rocks that makes a small pla orm we used to jump or dive off
My mother told us that the Royal Air Force (RAF) men had built it. The inscrip on reads: RAF A tribute to the building genius of LAC Rawley LAC Johnson 10/11/1941.
I love that silly but endearing humour of the Brits, and was happy it had survived the storm surge. (LAC stands for Leading Aircra man).
It took me back to the stories my mother used to tell us about the me the RAF men had stayed at Noetzie during World War 2.
The Henderson family, who built the “castles”, offered one of them to the RAF to use for rest and recrea on for the airmen during the war.
I imagine what it must have been like for those young men, who had probably never le Britain un l the war, to come to such a remote, isolated place. Perfect for ge ng over the stress of war in one way, but no bright lights, pubs or dances that was also a way of release during the war
“I remember the first me we saw the RAF men on the beach we were shocked at how white they were. We had never seen anyone with such milk white skin.”
My mom, a young woman at the me, had fun with them. Many could not swim, so she lent them sur oards – belly boards – made out of yellowwood. Once they got the hang of it, they thought surfing was great.
She took them up the river in her canoe, and they also tried their hand at rowing the wooden clinker rowing boat, which had my mom and her cousin in hysterics as the guys went around in circles, looking bewildered.
My grandmother o en had big lunch par es on Sundays, quite a feat with just a wood stove and a temperamental paraffin fridge. I imagine the RAF men who were invited during their stay must have found some of the South African food strange – like sousboontjies and sosa es
As I looked at the cement pla orm, I traced my finger along those names, Rawley and Johnson, and wondered about them.
Did they survive the war? Did they have children and grandchildren who may have heard their tales about this remote spot in Africa called Noetzie?
We’ll never know.
And they will never know that several genera ons of li le South African feet have used their cement pla orm to launch themselves into the river, just as those Bri sh airmen did so long ago.
