Climate Powered Storm Surge

The massive storm surge at Noetzie was magnificent and terrifying.

Wooden and concrete steps were washed away, the river boardwalk was broken, bins washed out to sea, and a garage door was smashed in. Worst of all, much of the beach was washed away. Where we had golden sands below the houses, we now have rocks. Rocks that we have never seen before. That wild sea really dug deep.

It began with the hecc westerly wind that roared for days and built up huge swells deep in the ocean. These reached the coast at the same me as spring de, which pushed the waves even higher

The damage occurred where the massive energy of the ocean met the resistance of the coastline. We got off lightly at Noetzie compared to some places.

At low de on Saturday morning we could see that the waves had come right up to below the houses during the night.

At high de that aernoon the sea was bigger, higher and wilder than we had ever seen it.

I don’t know if any of you feel the same, but I find extreme forces of nature thrilling. They are frightening, and cause destrucon, yet they fill me with a kind of electrifying awe.

We stood at the boom of the old Wagon Road and stared in amazement. There was no beach and no river, just one huge roaring ocean, swirling and thrashing against the shore. I have never seen anything like this at Noetzie.

I wanted to get some shots and ended up with a jerky video of the waves pounding in, my sister Julie yelling at me to get back and then a screech from me as a wave breaks through the vegetaon on the footpath and drenches me from the waist down.

Then the voice of another sister, Sabrina, saying: “You must look through your eyes, not through your phone!”

We saw a rubbish bin come tumbling by, and then a big round plasc object with a hole in one side. It was the inside of a portable loo. The blue cubicle was seen floang out to sea by a neighbour

Although it was an excing experience to be so close to such a powerful force of nature, it is also deeply worrying. We know this is not a one-off event. It is a sign of things to come because of global climate change.

Sea levels are rising, storms are becoming stronger, and surges on coastlines around the world are becoming more frequent and more intense.

It is a wake-up call for us all. Climate change is not something that will happen in the future. It is already happening – like this weekend’s storm surge - and it will get worse.

We know that burning oil, coal and gas is the biggest cause of global warming – yet the world is not moving away from fossil fuels fast enough. Check out Our World in Data online to see global fossil fuel consumpon.

So yes, the storm surge was thrilling to watch. It was also a chilling snapshot of the future, and the dreadful legacy we are leaving our children and grandchildren.

an indelible mark on our family home in Dunkeld, Johannesburg, and her creative spirit flowed into her Leisure Island residence, a home that was designed never to age.

June's culinary prowess was legendary. A Cordon Bleu-trained chef, she was a member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs and the Chair lady of the Southern Cape Food and Wine Society.

June's community spirit was nurtured by her Aunt, Stella McKurmac, founder of an Old Age Home in Benoni in the late 1930s.

On 11 September 2023, we bid farewell to o u r b e l o v e d J u n e S t e l l a B o u w e r, a cherished mother, grandmother, friend, and endless source of inspiration.

June transcended the role of a mother; she e m b o d i e d i n s p i r a t i o n , l o v e , a n d a n u n w av e r i n g d e m o n s t r a t i o n o f creativity, resilience and determination.

In the heart of Knysna, June was known as t h e e l e g a n t l a d y w i t h s n o w y h a i r gracefully manoeuvring her Red Nissan Sports Car through the town's streets. Her remarkable talents extended beyond the wheel.

June was not just a mother but an a c c o m p l i s h e d fl o r a l a r r a n g e r , earning a silver medal at the 2002 World Association of Flower Arrangers Show in Glasgow. Her dedication to the Garden Route Floral Art Club was unwavering, a testament to her enduring commitment to the art of flower arrangement, which she pursued until her final days.

As a textile designer, June possessed a d i s c e r n i n g e y e f o r d e s i g n a n d an unbridled passion for creation. June left

In Johannesburg, she tirelessly raised funds for the Avril Elizabeth Home and, in Knysna, the Red Cross. June initiated the Leisure Island Christmas Fete at the Library, supporting Friends of the Library, and added her delicious Rex Union marmalade to its appeal.

Before her textile design career, June delved into fashion design, allowing her to c r a f t a n d s e w u n i q u e c r e a t i o n s , a testament to her boundless creativity.

June loved pottering around in the garden and could always be found taking snippets for her endless floral arrangements.

June's legacy is a tapestry of creativity, generosity, and unwavering dedication to her passions and community. Mom leaves behind an enduring trail of inspiration that will forever guide our hearts.

June will be missed Zooming around Knysna in her Red Sports Car!
