A House Full of Memories

I stood on the balcony at Noetzie with the old breadboard in my hands, the sun warm on my back and the roar of the waves in the background.

I ran my fingers over the surface and felt the smooth indentaon made from a thousand knives that had cut bread and chopped vegetables over the last 60 years. It has been in the beach house as long as I remember, and before that in my parents’ house in Cape Town. I loved the feel of the smooth dent made by so many hands, some no longer with us.

And now we were chucking it out – with a pile of other stuff. Our lile beach house, built by my parents on a plot inherited from my grandparents, has sadly reached the end of its life and we are demolishing it in about 10 days’ me.

It is a prefab house and the iron girders holding the panels have rusted and it is no longer stable.

We are hard at work packing up the contents. It is a nostalgic journey. So many memories, and so many things forgoen.

An old birthday card slips out of a book. We laugh at the heading: To a Woman Who Runs with Poodles – a humourous skit on Women Who Run with Wolves.

Opening a top cupboard I find 10 paraffin lamps from the days before we had solar lighng.

I have happy memories of us all sing around the table on a warm summer’s night eang supper by the light of these lamps.

I remember filling the lamps from a big metal can of paraffin, and washing the chimneys, my knuckles black from the soot. All packed up now to give away.

I found an old jaffle iron and was going to toss it because I can’t remember anyone making jaffles in years, but the others said keep it. Jaffles were our staple for lunch when we were teenagers and we loved them.

Sho! It is amazing how things rust at the beach.

The other problem is borer beetle. They have invaded all the pine - even the wooden lavatory seat. (Imagine if a beetle emerged when someone was sing on the seat. If they can nosh through wood, skin would be a cinch.)

Our new house will have a lot of wood in the structure, so we can’t risk keeping any of the beetle-infested stuff – that’s why the breadboard has to go, along with a bed, double bunk and cupboards.

I picked up the small, baered frying pan that my father used to take on mountain hikes as a student. The handle was rusty and the outside blackened. I loved it because of its history – and it was a surprisingly good pancake pan. But it was rusty so I put it on the throw-out pile.

Last night I woke up and thought: “Nooo! I want dad’s old frying pan! I love it!”

There is sll a long way to go with our packing and sorng. As we do so, the words of US author William Faulkner ring so true: “Our most treasured family heirlooms are our sweet family memories.”
