Help Put Back

One day Nelson Mandela came to visit the Cape Times. He walked through the newsroom and chaed to us.

We were all excited and crammed around him. I remember he stopped to speak to my pregnant colleague, Jenny. He put his hands on her swollen belly and wished her well. How many men could get away with doing that? Jenny was thrilled, and called her daughter Grace aer his wife.

What I remember most was Mandela’s answer to a queson from our news editor. He said: “Mr Mandela, you have given so much to this country. What can we white people do for the country?”

We cringed a bit because it seemed a bit odd to talk in racial terms, but Mandela didn’t think so.

“Well, you know, government cannot do everything. We need help. As white people you had a privileged background. You had good educaon. Now you must use your educaon and skills to help build the country”

That really made an impression on me.

What made me think of that now was a video sent to me of Dr Imaz Sooliman, founder of the humanitarian organisaon Gi of the Givers.

Sooliman was the guest speaker at the Agri Eastern Cape meeng and his talk was about the future of South Africa. He expressed the same view as Mandela: government cannot do it alone.

“Because 7.4 million people’s taxes cannot look aer 65 million people. It’s impossible. So we have an obligaon, those of us who have, to work with government, pulling people up.”

When he tells people that, they argue that they have already forked out so much money to government in personal tax, company tax, VAT, rates etc.

“Yes, you do pay all of that, but sll, it is not enough to cover the lives of 65 million people.”

Sooliman certainly pracces what he preaches. When there is any disaster - floods, earthquakes, cholera, fire - the Gi of the Givers is there, rolling up their sleeves and donang what people need.

Although the organisaon was established in 1992, the first me I really became aware of it was in 2010 when Beaufort West was suffering a severe drought. The town, which relies heavily on underground water, had only a couple of weeks of water le.

I drove up to do a story on the situaon. In one of the petrol staons I saw mountains of boled water. I asked where they had come from and was told the Gi of the Givers had brought them. They were right there doing what was needed most: geng drinking water to the people, as they have done with the KZN floods, Turkey earthquake, Charloe Maxeke Hospital and much more.

There are many people who are helping build the country, but there are far more who do nothing. “What’s the point? There is so much corrupon.”

Sooliman believes it is this kind of negavity that can destroy a country

“But if you li people up, you li yourself up. The good goes up and the bad goes down. Send posive talk to the universe, posive things happen. And this country will survive.”

Now there’s a challenge.
