Heeding Wild Hippo

Most of you will have heard that a SANParks official was killed by a charging hippo while camping in the Kruger Naonal Park at the weekend.

Environment Minister Barbara Creecy gave no details about the aack, but said Kobus De Wet (62), had “played a leading role in the effort to combat rhino poaching and a plethora of environmental crimes in naonal parks”.

Sad for his family, and a blow for SANParks to lose someone of that calibre.

There is no doubt that hippos are dangerous if threatened. I have wrien before about a hippo that chomped right through a Land Rover fender when I was on a hippo capture while working for the former Natal Parks Board.

Rangers explained that hippos feel safe in the water, so if anyone gets between them and the water, they perceive this as a threat and will charge.

Hippos can reach speeds of 30km/h. If there are no handy trees to climb, the results can be fatal.

When I was on a canoe trip down the Zambezi some years ago, I remember our guide warning us of the dangers of paddling too close to hippos.

I was very happy to give them a wide berth. Not so my Canadian canoe partner paddling at the back. On the first morning we were gliding along happily when I saw a herd of hippo up ahead. I told him we should paddle le to avoid them. He peered ahead and said: “Hippos? Nah, those are just rocks.”

“Well, those rocks have ears and they are twitching!” I replied.

We stayed on a straight course and as we got closer I could hear the “whoosh” of their breath as one hippo aer another surfaced to invesgate the intruder heading towards them.

“We’re too close!” I pleaded. “We must paddle to the le!”

Trouble was, he was a much stronger paddler than I, and anyway the back paddler is the one who steers.

You know that feeling when you just want to run – but where can you run to in a canoe?

I could see their bulging eyes staring at us and just as I was ready to scream at him, our guide bellowed: “Get the hell over to the le you crazy @#!&^% or you will be killed!”

Our guide was a big bloke, and he had a rifle, but I think it was just the sheer force of his bellow that got the Canadian to paddle to the le.

We glided by the hippos, much too close for comfort, but we made it.

When we got to our lunch spot, we got an earful.

That evening the guide took me aside and said he knew it was not my fault.

“The trouble with these foreigners is their only experience of African animals is in zoos, and they just don’t understand they are dangerous in the wild,” he said.

I’ll end with a hippo quote by US humourist Erma Bombeck that made me smile: “The hippopotamus is a vegetarian and looks like a wall. Lions eat only red meat and are sleek and slim. Are nutrionists on the wrong track?”
