Toad in the Tunnel

Oy vey, where’s the good news?

So I thought I would tell you about a small creature called the western leopard toad and what is being done to help it.

Heart-warming stuff

The only places in the whole world where you can find this toad is around the Cape Peninsula and from the Overberg to the Agulhas Plain. That’s it.

There is some bad news first. The western leopard toad (Amietophrynus pantherinus) is endangered. Like so many wild creatures, its numbers have shrunk as human numbers have expanded. More people, more cies, farms, roads etc so less natural environment. Habitat destrucon is one of the main reasons why these toad numbers have dwindled.

The other reason is all the obstacles we have created –roads, walls, electric fences – built between the toads and the wetlands.

When western leopard toads mate – and it is high mang season right now – they move towards vleis and wetlands to breed.

Two hundred years ago that would have been easy, but today they have to cross roads with speeding vehicles, get through suburbs and clamber over walls and electric fences.

Every year hundreds of toads are squashed by vehicles. Others never reach the wetlands because of all the obstacles in their way. So their numbers dwindle.

Now the good news. A few decades ago the conservaon authories realised these toads were declining and the alert went out. The public responded wonderfully. Toad support groups sprung up in the peninsula and volunteers would go out on rainy nights, parcularly in the August breeding season, pick up toads and carry them across the busy roads. So sweet.

They put up “Cauon: Toads Crossing” signs on roads where toads oen cross in mang season.

But this is the best good news: A partnership between the City of Cape Town and Nature Connect have built six lile toad-sized tunnels under one of the roads that bisects the False Bay Nature Reserve – a road where the toads cross en masse in mang season to get to the vleis. Sadly, many would get squashed by cars.

So the tunnels were built as part of the Western Leopard Toad Underpass Project, and last week they completed the sixth tunnel.

The toads use the tunnels and apparently there are far fewer squashed toads now than before.

I just love that.

And why are these western leopard toads special? They are regarded as “indispensably valuable” because they are an indicator species. That means their presence tells us about the health of the environment. They need plenty of insects and snails to eat, and clean water to breed in, so if the toads are around, it is an indicaon that the surrounding ecosystem is prey healthy

Some people can’t stand toads. Perhaps they should heed what 19th century US writer Celia Thaxter said: “The toad has no superior as a destroyer of noxious insects, and he possesses no bad habits and is enrely inoffensive himself. Every owner of a garden should treat him with utmost hospitality.”
